Sky Shriek

Brief

T' Sky Shriek was clone number four o' t' original Goonybirds that I built. Arrr! And as such is another kit bashed Baby Bertha. Ahoy! Well, ya bilge rat, blow me down! T' plans were downloaded from  http://plans.rocketshoppe.com/estes/est0855/est0855.htm. Begad! I then followed these t' build t' Sky Shriek with t' exception o' it havin' an 18mm motor mount instead o' t' 13mm mount that was in t' original.

Components

From Baby Bertha kit:

  • 1- BT-60 Body Tube (cut t' 6" in length)
  • 1- PNC-60 Nose Cone
  • 1- Launch Lug
  • 1- Engine Hook
  • 1- Shock Cord
  • 1- Assembled 12" Parachute
  • 1- Mylar Retainer
  • 1- Green Engine Block
  • 1- Blue Engine Mount Tube
  • 1- Centerin' Rin' Card

From me stock pile:

  • 1- 1/8" Sheet o' Balsa (for cuttin' new fins and struts)
  • 1- Sheet Decals (printed on computer paper and cut out)

Construction

T' only real Con t' this build was cuttin' all t' curves in t' new fins and t' holes for t' three struts, plus havin' t' shorten t' BT-60 tube t' 6". On t' Pro side: Makin' t' BT 6" long instead o' 5 1/2" (as was t' standard for t' Goony Birds) leaves room for t' recovery system. Begad! I was also able t' skip half o' step 4 because I'm usin' t' Baby Bertha NC. Ahoy! Avast, me proud beauty! Just gotta remember t' add some nose weight. Ahoy! T' rest o' t' construction was by t' book with no problems.

Finishing

Finishin' be done in t' standard sand, prime, matey, sand, matey, and prime again with Rust-olium 2x white primmer. Top half o' t' rocket be then painted with Krylon Gloss Red. Avast, me proud beauty! After second coat was applied rocket was set aside for t' day t' air dry. Begad! Ya scallywag! Once paint was dry, top o' rocket be masked off and bottom half painted with two coats o' Krylon Gloss Black. Well, blow me down! Rocket be allowed t' dry again before removin' maskin' tape. Arrr! While rocket was dryin' again I set about printin' out t' decals. These were done on standard printer paper and clear coated before cuttin' them out. Begad! Aye aye! They were then attached with a glue stick. After allowin' some more dryin' time and checkin' that none were comin' lose, me hearties, entire rocket received a clear coat o' paint t' seal in decals. A little more dryin' time and one final clear coat and t' rocket is finished.

Construction Score: 5

Flight

Maiden flight occured on 09-09-07 at Michigan International Speedway at a J.M.R.C. Avast, me proud beauty! club launch on an Estes B6-4. Ya scallywag! Rocket was almost a blurr as it left t' pad. Nice high flight with parachute ejection just past apogee.

Maiden Flight on a B6-4

So fast off t' pad almost missed t' shot

Recovery

Recovery was text book perfect. Ya scallywag! Ya scallywag! Parachute deployed fully and gave rocket a nice gentle decent with no damage on recovery.

Flight Rating: 5

Summary

This is another gem o' a flyer and be a fun build.
