Brief

Here I go again. Avast! Ya scallywag! For those o' you that have followed my Goonyness  this was Baby Bertha kit bash #14. Ya scallywag! Begad! Again this is nay a kit review o' t' original Estes Hawkeye (Kit #0873) [1986-1996]

It is another o' me many kit bashes. All fin patterns and decals came from http://www.spacemodeling.org/JimZ/est0873.htmT' major difference again bein' that mine is a Goony version o' t' Hawkeye and as such is built with a BT-60 tube instead o' a BT-5 tube that be used in t' original. Begad! As a result it also has an 18mm motor mount instead o' a 13mm.

Components

As stated this is another kit bash so t' main components are as follows:

From Baby Bertha kit:

  • 1- BT-60 Body Tube
  • 1- PNC-60 Nose Cone
  • 1- Launch Lug
  • 1- Engine Hook
  • 1- Shock Cord
  • 1- Assembled 12" Parachute (transparent orange plastic)
  • 1- Mylar Retainer
  • 1- Green Engine Block
  • 1- Blue Engine Mount Tube
  • 1- Centerin' Rin' Card
  • 1- Balsa Fin Sheet

 From me stock supply:

  • 2- Sheets Printer Paper (one for coverin' balsa and one for printin' out new decals)
  • 1- Yellow E engine guide from a previous Estes kit (cut down t' two 1.5" tubes)

Construction

As with t' previous Goony builds this was a by t' book build. Ahoy! Instructions were down loaded and followed step by step. Avast, me proud beauty! Once again t' only Con: bein' that I had t' draw and cut all new parts from fresh balsa.

Finishing

Finishin' be again done in me standard fashion o' first applyin' two coats o' Rust-Oleum 2x primmer with light sandin' betwixt coats. Then I applied two coats o' Krylon Light Grey t' t' body while t' NC got two coats o' Krylon Gloss White. Arrr! Rocket be then left t' air dry over night. Well, blow me down! Decals were printed on paper then clear coated with Krylon Clear Coat. Blimey! After allowin' t' dry they were cut out and trimmed and attached with a glue stick as is me standard for all these kitbashes. Begad! Blimey! After checkin' again t' make sure all were firmly attached I gave t' rocket two coats o' Krylon Clear Coat t' seal on t' decals. T' only Con: is that I'm still usin' printer paper to print out the decals. Blimey! Ya scallywag! They would look a lot better if I could get me hands on some decal paper but I built these on a tight budget and basicly what I had on hand.

Flight

Once again t' maiden flight was at a S.M.A.S.H. Begad! club launch on 06-20-10 and was another picture perfect flight so good that I again forgot t' take photos. That be t' only Con: I hate it when I forget t' take pics.

Recovery

This rocket has one o' t' new Estes orange plastic parachutes with a 3" spill hole cut in it which be perfect for this flight. Aye aye! Blimey! Rocket came down at a nice safe decent speed and landed without any damage a short distance down range.

Flight Rating: 5

Summary

Another great flier and one more beauty to add t' me Goony fleet.
