Brief:
Upon becomin' seriously involved as a BAR in t' sprin' o' 2001, matey, I went lookin' through local hobby stores, me hearties, shiver me timbers, hopin' t' find that some o' me favorite rockets from me early years were still available. Ahoy! T' Wizard, a high flyin' minimum diameter rocket, turned out t' be t' sole remainin' holdover from me original fleet.
Construction:
Included in t' kit:
Despite t' hard creative times that Estes had obviously fallen upon durin' me absence from t' hobby, one thin' remained constant; t' continued excellence o' t' Estes instructions. (Not that I used them or anything. I just looked through them before I started.) T' continued availability o' this and several other Beta series rockets makes one wonder why anyone would bother t' buy t' RTF garbage that Estes seems so intent on foistin' upon us these days. Blimey! (I know. Avast, me proud beauty! Blimey! Instant gratification.) With t' Wizard you are rewarded with a sharp looking, matey, high flyin' rocket that can be flown without worryin' that t' thin walled RTF body tube will fold up as t' rocket leaves t' pad or if it will withstand a vigorous ejection charge. Buildin' t' Wizard is almost obscenely easy. Arrr! Glue in t' engine block and attach t' fins and recovery system and you're literally ready t' paint.
Finishing:
This was one area where I felt that I could make improvements. Begad! Arrr! Aside from it's stunnin' performance, me bucko, t' thin' I liked best about t' original Wizard be it's clean, uncluttered appearance. Avast! Avast! Unfortunately, somewhere along t' way someone at Estes decided that t' rocket needed a more cluttered look, so they re-designed t' paint and decal scheme t' accomplish just that. Begad! Gone be t' classic simplicity o' t' purple/white/black scheme o' t' original, me hearties, ditched in favor o' a blue/red/yellow scheme that looks as slick and nauseatin' as a polyester suit and a spinnin' disco ball. Avast! That said, I immediately gave t' "sticker" decal t' me kids t' play with and set about paintin' t' rocket t' look just like t' one I lost on it's first flight 22 years earlier. Begad! At t' time I wasn't acquainted with t' myriad o' options available for recreatin' vintage decals. Avast! As such, me bucko, I be goin' t' let t' rocket go without t' distinctive decal that graced t' original, me bucko, but then I remembered that Rocketry Online had a free classified ad service. Begad! I placed an ad lookin' t' buy an old Wizard decal from someone, ya bilge rat, and t' me great shock and surprise, I received several e-mails offerin' one t' me for free. Well, blow me down! Begad! T' first offer came from Stan Hyuge and while I'd like t' say thanks t' Stan, I'd like t' also thank t' others who also offered me t' decal. I be happily surprised at discoverin' that, with a few obvious exceptions, ya bilge rat, arrr, this be a very friendly hobby. Avast, me proud beauty! This was t' first rocket on which I used sandin' sealer made from thinned Elmer's Fill N Finish, and t' difference was noticeable in t' finished product.

Flight:
I've flown t' Wizard on engines throughout t' recommended range and have had great results on all o' them. An A8-3 is a decent choice for small field flying, me hearties, t' rocket never quite goin' completely out o' sight, while C6-5's and C6-7's should be used only when you have plenty o' clear space t' work with, arrr, because it flies high and drifts forever. Aye aye! Avast! Preparation is simple. Ya scallywag! Arrr! Put in a bit o' recovery wadding, matey, pack t' streamer, me bucko, friction fit t' engine with maskin' tape and it's ready t' go. Well, blow me down! Straight, very high flights. This rocket would seem t' be a good choice for t' streamer and parachute duration requirements for t' NARTREK Program.
Flight Rating: 5 out o' 5
Summary:
Pro's: Good looks (classic version) and great performance. Ahoy! Easy t' build. Arrr! Bright orange streamer looks great against t' purple and white paint.
Con's: Ugly new paint and decal scheme. Avast, me proud beauty! Avast! (Current version.) Sticker decal. Begad! Too short shock cord.

A very easy kit to build, good price. The hobby store I go to sold them in the bulk pack and put it on the shelf so it it was even cheaper :) Components Engine Spacer Engine Block Body Tube Launch Lug Shock Cord Mount Tube Marking Guide Streamer Shock Cord Nose Cone Nose Cone Insert Blasa Fins Decals It seems like a lot, but ...
Brief: One of very few good Estes little minimum diameter rocket kits. Construction: The kit includes: 8.75" of BT-20 EB-20 NC-20,plastic ogive 3 balsa fins 1" x 18" streamer ~18" of shock cord Construction was easy taking about 2 hours. You could do it in half an hour with cyanoacrylate (CA). No problems here. Motor retention is ...
This guy is a good starter's rocket, as it is easy to build, fun to fly, and yet it presents more of a challenge than the "ready-to-fly" kits. The instructions were easy to follow with basic sketches to depict just about every step. I felt that no special measures needed to be taken during assembly -- just follow the instructions! Finishing: I find the best way to finish small diameter ...
This is truly a great beginner's rocket. I picked it up, being a BAR, to get myself back into the rocket building world. I built mine exactly by the instructions. When preparing for flight, I find it sometimes difficult to pack the streamer so that it ejects with no problem. If I were to build another, I would tie a length of Kevlar to the engine block for use as the shock cord. This way, there ...
Brief: The Estes Wizard is a basic 18mm rocket but it's a very fast and high flying rocket. Construction: The kit came with 8.75" of BT-20, a launch lug, engine block, shock cord, streamer, a plastic nose cone and die-cut balsa to make fins. The Estes Wizard is extremely easy to make, especially since the motor is friction fit so you just need to glue in the engine block. ...
