[Picture](07/01/03) I finally got around to purchasin' a couple o' Art Applewhite's Flyin' Saucers. Avast! Well, blow me down! Been meanin' to, me bucko, just never got around t' it. When I did, I be glad he accepted PayPal. Made it very easy. Ya scallywag! I purchased t' Gold 6" 18mm Delta Flyin' Saucer and t' Gold 4" 13mm Delta Flyin' Saucers.

I'm writin' t' review for t' 18mm version because thar isn't currently a review on EMRR. Blimey! Blimey! But I have t' admit t' same thin' Dick Stafford did, these kits all build just about t' same! Blimey! Blimey! Blimey! There was virtually no difference betwixt me build experience on t' 13mm version verses the 18mm version. Begad! Blimey! In addition, thar are very few parts, ya bilge rat, me hearties, four t' be exact: 1) Top Cardstock, 2) Bottom Cardstock, 3) 18mm motor mount, matey, and 4) Foam Center.

Rocket PicCONSTRUCTION:

T' instructions are printed on 3 pages of 8½ x 11" paper. Begad! Ya scallywag! They include black and white photos t' assist in the buildin' process. Blimey! Avast, me bucko, me proud beauty! T' tools and supplies that are needed are outlined: Scissors, #11 Exacto® Knife, arrr, Elmer's Glue-All® and 150 girt sandpaper. That's it and you're ready t' go.

Assembly is simple. Cut out t' Top and Bottom from t' cardstock. Avast, me proud beauty! Blimey! Cut out t' Top and Bottom Seam pieces from t' card stock. Arrr! Blimey! Glue t' Seam (tab) onto one side o' t' Top. Begad! Blimey! Let dry. Ya scallywag! Blimey! Glue t' other side o' t' Top onto t' exposed Seam (tab), me hearties, thereby formin' your Top Cone. Repeat for t' Bottom Cone.

Usin' your hobby knife, cut out t' Center from t' provided 1/4" foam board. Well, blow me down! Blimey! Aye aye! Blimey! Cut out t' center o' t' Center (which is t' motor mount hole). Ya scallywag! Blimey! Now you are ready for t' most difficult part of construction; cuttin' t' 30 degree bevel on t' outside edge o' t' Center. Be sure t' use a new blade and take your time. Begad! Blimey! Ahoy! Blimey! Doin' those two things makes this a lot easier than it sounds.

Once t' Center is prepared then final assembly is relatively simple. You glue t' Center t' t' Top. You then glue in the motor mount. Ahoy! Avast, me proud beauty! Lastly, me hearties, you glue t' Bottom t' t' motor mount and Center. Apply some fillets on all t' seams and ta-da... you're done.

Overall, me bucko, for CONSTRUCTION I would rate this kit 5 points. Well, blow me down! Blimey! Avast, shiver me timbers, me proud beauty! Blimey! Nay sure how it could be any easier!

Rocket PicRocket PciFLIGHT/RECOVERY:

Art Applewhite recommends a C6-0, ya bilge rat, B6-0 or a RMS 18/20 Reload. Ahoy! T' motors are t' be friction fit into t' motor mount with the warnin' that no motor should stick out further than ½" from below the motor mount.

I have flow t' 18mm version 3 times, all on B6-0's. Well, blow me down! I be plannin' on usin' this as a demo rocket for me son's kindergarten class, shiver me timbers, but that never worked out. Ahoy! Begad! It would make an excellent demo rocket, and it would even make an excellent school project rocket!

All t' flights were t' same, arrr, straight up, invert and right back t' us. Begad! Altitude? Hmmmm, arrr, maybe 30 feet. Arrr! Hard t' say, but it would make a good backyard flier.

For FLIGHT/RECOVERY, shiver me timbers, arrr, I would rate this rocket 5 points. I don't see any way t' knock a rocket that has no recovery system t' fail, no need for wadding, no need for motor retention (although that could be t' only thin' t' add), and always comes back t' where you are!

I give t' rocket an OVERALL ratin' o' 5 points. Avast! Yes, it is a "perfect" rocket for its price, instructions, shiver me timbers, shiver me timbers, assembly and flight characteristics. Arrr! Ya scallywag! Go give one a try!

( Contributed - by Dwayne Surdu-Miller - 07/24/06) Brief: I was fortunate enough to win this kit as a prize for entering my Barbsari B-Prize design into Descon 15. I asked for and received the Spaceship Earth version. I was amazed at how quickly the shipment arrived after I'd specified what version I'd like. Mondo kudos to Art Applewhite for fantastic service. I agree with this review: they are indeed quite simple. I got several, including the 6in, 18mm gold saucer. The gold cardstock is very cool. 1.If you get white glue on it, don't panic: simply scrape the glue off with your fingernail. 2. It is quite reflective and resembles a "real" flying saucer. 3. Read what Mr. Stafford said about the gold cardstock. These flying saucer kits are just that: kits. They are, however, well thought out. Mr. Applewhite did a good job on the foam board, which has a circular line drawn just inside the outer edge to make cutting the bevel a lot easier. The foam board also makes the saucer a lot more sturdy. One thing about the launch lug holes: the ones on the shrouds fit a 3/16in rod, but the one in the foam board fits the 1/8 rod. Solution: cut the launch lug hole in the center bigger.
