Harpoon PicBrief
This is an approximately 1/5th scale model o' t' Harpoon anti-ship missile.

Construction
My kit arrived in a "standard" long plastic bag. Ya scallywag! All parts were accounted for, and in good shape. Well, blow me down! T' body tubes appear t' be standard BT-80, me hearties, shiver me timbers, and t' nose is a PNC-80B. Ya scallywag! Avast, me proud beauty! There were a couple o' nice sheets o' balsa for t' fins, plus some strips for makin' some o' t' detailing. T' included recovery system consists o' a mylar chute, me hearties, complete with snap swivels, etc.

T' instructions are straightforward, and easy t' follow. Arrr! Blimey! There are a couple o' drawings t' illustrate positionin' o' various elements, ya bilge rat, as well as t' help with placement o' markings on t' finished product. Arrr! Begad! Blimey! Templates are included for t' two different fin sets, but TLP has neglected t' include a fin markin' guide (I snarfed one out o' me Estes Phoenix kit). Launch lug placement is left t' t' whim o' t' builder- it isn't even discussed in t' directions.

After t' amount o' effort required on me last TLP kit (the Sidewinder), I was braced for more o' t' same here. I was quite shocked at how easy this bird went together! A bit o' care is needed assemblin' and installin' t' boat tail and t' paper "hat" on t' nose, shiver me timbers, but t' rest o' t' kit be a breeze.

Finishing
As with all TLP kits (to date, anyway), me hearties, no decals are included. Ahoy! They do provide some paintin' information, me bucko, arrr, includin' two different schemes.

I ran into two problems durin' this stage: First o' all, me bucko, I accidentally sanded t' tip off t' paper shroud on t' nose (and I wasn't sandin' hard, either). Ya scallywag! I filled t' resultin' hole with some Fill 'n Finish, me bucko, me bucko, sanded that, and then soaked some CA into it, just t' be sure. Avast! T' other problem is one o' t' suggested detailin' techniques. Begad! T' instructions call for t' builder t' CA 150 pinheads in place in various locations on t' rocket. Well, blow me down! I have patience, me hearties, but thar's a limit! I found a good work around, arrr, matey, however: One o' t' R/C aircraft companies produces a sheet o' 1/5th scale decals (dry transfer). Begad! I picked some up, shiver me timbers, and they work fine!

Construction Rating: 4 ½ out o' 5

Harpoon FlightFlight
So far I've had one flight with t' Harpoon, me hearties, me bucko, and I was impressed. Begad! I loaded t' recommended 1st flight motor, me bucko, an Estes D12-5, and hoped for t' best.

I was nay disappointed! T' missile lifted off at a nice speed- fast, but slow enough t' watch and appreciate. Ascent be arrow-straight, with no arcin' durin' powered flight.

Recovery
T' chute deployed at apogee, and t' mylar chute brought t' ship down safely. Well, blow me down! It looked a bit quick, arrr, arrr, but no damage occurred (not a scratch!).

I'm still a bit iffy on t' TLP way o' securin' t' nose t' t' shock cord (with a bit o' thread), but I've had no problems so far.

Flight Rating: 5 out o' 5

Summary
I'm very pleased with me Harpoon. Arrr! It's a smart lookin' rocket, shiver me timbers, and t' kit is challenging, ya bilge rat, but nay frustrating.

It's nay as complicated t' build as some TLP kits, arrr, and is perhaps a decent introduction t' their line o' products. Begad! Some modelers may have trouble with t' paper cone and boat tail, but t' key is t' go slow, and pay attention t' t' suggestions in t' instructions.

T' quality o' materials is quite good. Blimey! Blimey! Blimey! Blimey! I'm beginnin' t' appreciate t' mylar chutes that are included- they seem far more resistant t' ejection charge damage than plastic. Well, blow me down! Blimey! My only quibbles about t' supplied parts are: (1) t' inclusion o' barely enough sheet balsa for t' job. I can understand t' reason for doin' so, me bucko, arrr, arrr, but it means really havin' t' fiddle around t' ensure you have enough for all t' fins. Begad! Blimey! (2) T' lack o' a fin markin' template o' any sort. Well, blow me down! Blimey! This is easy enough t' produce, and it can be printed right on t' instructions (as Estes Does). Avast, me hearties, me proud beauty! Blimey! (3) Finally, matey, t' lack o' any decals for finishing. T' instructions suggest cuttin' t' heads off 150 pins and CA-in' then in place on t' rocket. Neat idea, but extremely time-consuming, and for folks like me, me hearties, would require lots o' debonder! Blimey! I opted for a sheet o' dry-transfer rivet decals from Carl Goldberg, matey, an R/C airplane manufacturer. Ya scallywag! Blimey! They worked great.

A roughly 1/5th scale model of the air-launched version of the HARPOON missile, designed for the modeler. Some skills required for optimum appearance results but otherwise easy to build and fly. My Harpoon kit arrived in a small package for what promised to be a big kit. Everything was there, good quality tubes, and a neat purple Mylar parachute (which works well and is easy to see), but ...

The Harpoon is a scale model of a US Air-Launched Anti-Ship Missile, The Launch Pad's kit is an excellent first mid power and scale rocket. I was so glad when I finally got my hands on my AGM-84 Harpoon. One of the members of my club was going down to the US and was kind enough to bring it back for me. I received the Harpoon with all pieces present, in good condition, and good quality. I have ...

I opted to fiberglass my fins with ultra-light cloth. It hardly adds any weight over the CA, but adds strength. I agree that the balsa seemed "flimsy" but by either CA'ing or fiberglassing, it can be fixed. I have flown mine on D12, and an E18. This weekend in Argonia KS, I flew on the E18, and was really impressed by the number of positive comments I received. I am really sold on the Launch Pad Kits, I just wish my local shops had better results getting them in stock. I understand there has been illness that has severely restricted availability. Truly a builder's kit, I enjoyed not having the kit ready in 15 minutes. I also enjoy having something different at the field from everyone's 3 fins and a nose cone.

I followed the directions regarding painting the fins with CA. The balsa used isn't real firm and after I had glued the big top fins on I noticed that the fins were warped a little. Must have been cause by the CA. Be careful when painting large flimsy fins with CA that they maintain their shape. First flight in light winds with a D12-5 and the rocket severely weather cocked. The warped fins probably didn't help either. The paper shroud at the motor engine end got a little bit flame damaged too.

The Harpoon is a great scale kit, with all of the parts being of the highest quality. The instructions were very good and cover all parts of construction well. This is a great kit to build and fly.

The balsa was not acceptable for the larger fins. It was extremely flimsy, and when I CA'd them they just curled up. I will not install them on the rocket. The small fins were ok, but it would be impossible to use the provided balsa without CA.
