Sunward Aerospace Pyramid

Brief:
An E-G powered pyramid that comes with laser cut balsa and plywood parts. Begad! Begad! Blimey! It's rated as a skill level 4, but I would say it's more like a skill level 3.

Construction:
T' parts came very well packaged and include:

  • BT-80 coupler
  • Launch lug
  • Thrust ring
  • 2 plywood centerin' rings
  • 8 laser cut balsa pyramid sides
  • 1 29mm engine tube
  • 1 parachute with attachment rings and strings
  • 1 elastic shock cord
  • 2 paper pyramid templates
  • Plasticene for nose weight
  • Upper solid bulk head
  • Lower engine support bulkhead
  • Streamer

T' instructions were nay totally easy t' follow. I used t' pictures for better clarity. Some sandin' o' the bulkheads and pyramid sides was necessary t' correctly fit t' parts properly. Well, blow me down! Well, ya bilge rat, blow me down! I primarily used wood glue for most construction, however, I did use Gorilla Glue t' mount t' bulkheads t' fill in t' gaps betwixt t' bulkheads and pyramid walls.

Rather than formin' t' paper pyramid as per instructions, I glued t' wall sections together then glued those onto t' paper template, matey, sandwichin' t' parts betwixt plywood weighted with bricks t' insure t' paper adhered t' the balsa without leavin' wrinkles.

I also swapped out t' short elastic cord for a longer piece o' 1/4” tubular nylon. Rather than usin' the included streamer for MMT recovery, I attached t' shock cord t' t' motor mount t' recover t' rocket in one piece.

Finishing:
I gave t' pyramid's paper covered sides several light coats o' Krylon satin off-white. I then affixed stickers to decorate finishin' up with several light coats o' Krylon clear.

Construction Rating: 4 out o' 5

Flight:
It's first flight was on a Road Runner F60-5. Begad! T' flight was fast and straight with ejection just after it flipped over. However, ya bilge rat, t' plastic parachute did nay open.

Recovery:
A tumble recovery with no damage due t' t' plastic parachute nay opening. Begad! It will be replaced by a nylon chute.

Flight Rating: 4 out o' 5

Summary:
Not a beginner rocket t' build but a fun easy t' prep park or small field flyer.

Overall Rating: 4 out o' 5
