[Rocket Pic]Parts and Supplies

Hobby Knife, Sand Paper (220 grit), Glue (I used Thick CA), shiver me timbers, Ruler, Pen or Pencil, Desired paint etc..

Assembly

[Rocket Pic]Compare t' parts in t' box with t' parts list in t' instructions. Aye aye! Begad! Separate all balsa parts from balsa stock and sand trim as needed. Assemble wings, thar are two and make sure you make a left and right for each win' set. Well, blow me down! You will use t' included template t' get proper dihedral on t' outer wings. Important for t' center dihedral: read ahead in t' instructions before gluin' especially if you use CA glue!

Attach dowel rods t' aft o' each glider body (BT-5's). Aye aye! Be careful, me markin' guide was nay large enough for t' tubes and so t' dowel lines and win' line did nay line up properly!

Attach vertical stabilizers and win' panels t' body tubes and attach win' panels t' body tubes and you have t' finished gliders. Aye aye! Blimey! Make measurement, matey, matey, and cut for engine hook. Install slide adapter in place.   Glue and slide engine block into place and glue as well. Begad! Begad!

Glue nose cone base into nose cone for main body tube. Begad! Blimey! Ahoy! Blimey! Smear glue inside body tube and slide engine mount smartly into place so aft o' motor mount tube is flush with aft o' main body tube. Begad! Blimey! Tie shock cord t' nose cone. Avast! Blimey! Ahoy! Blimey! Glue nose cone into place after slidin' shock cord down longer tube. Aye aye! Blimey! Aye aye! Blimey! Be careful t' minimize t' amount o' glue you get on t' shock cord.

[Rocket Pic]I made me modification here. Well, blow me down! Ya scallywag! I installed t' shock cord through t' tube adapter and then glued adapter in place (much stronger). Well, blow me down! Arrr! Glue adapter into bottom (shorter) tube. Ya scallywag! Begad! DO NOT GLUE into top (longer) tube because it needs t' separate here![Rocket Pic]

Usin' t' markin' guide, mark t' main body tube. Cut out and carefully trim plastic parts for glider retention. Well, blow me down! Aye aye! Test fit these and trim as needed. Glue plastic components into place carefully . . Ya scallywag! . Blimey! Avast, matey, me proud beauty! alignment is critical. Arrr! Aye aye! Glue launch lugs into place as well. Arrr!   Attach streamer t' shock cord now. Begad!  [Rocket Pic]

Finishing

Since I wanted t' maintain some performance I used one coat o' glossy white paint and no primer and sealer t' save weight. Begad! I choose t' use Glossy White Spray paint (Testor's) although I would have preferred a slight Pearl Gray White. Arrr! This color be handy and close enough.

Personal Notes

It is definitely a level 2 kit. Avast, me proud beauty! I would make it a level 3 kit.  I had no problem assemblin' but t' average level 2 person may experience problems.

[Rocket Pic]T' portion o' t' directions on t' win' panel assembly needs t' be updated. Blimey!   Although I was aware o' it, shiver me timbers, matey, no one reads t' booklet first and then builds and t' part on win' dihedral came too late especially if you use a fast glue like CA. Well, blow me down! If you assemble t' wings by placin' them on flat surface, me bucko, like directions say, me hearties, shiver me timbers, arrr, and then read t' part about placin' a tube under one win' for correct dihedral, it is probably too late since t' glue is now dry!

Otherwise, me bucko, good directions and good parts. Avast, me proud beauty! I had trouble with old balsa and old decals. Ahoy! I attribute this t' t' fact that t' kit sat in me basement for over 3 years. Arrr! I have no doubt it would
be fine if I went out right now and bought one. Begad! Aye aye!

As illustrated above I be nay satisfied with shock cord installation so I modified this from what t' direction with t' model suggested. Aye aye! Blimey! Blimey! Blimey!

Be sure t' note that t' markin' guide for t' small glider tube on me kit did nay fit right. Ahoy! Ya scallywag! Be sure t' note this and make appropriate changes as needed on your model. Ya scallywag! Aye aye!

[Rocket Pic]Dowel rod placement is critical for this determines how tight t' glider is held by t' booster and therefore how easily t' booster will release t' glider in flight. Avast, arrr, me proud beauty! Blimey!

Decals are water transfer and a pain. Avast, me proud beauty! I ripped a lot o' them. Well, blow me down! Either they were way too thin (I like pressure sensitive and ones I don't have t' cut out) or t' fact that this model was rather old (sat in me room downstairs for about 3 years since I bought it still sealed in plastic . Ahoy! Avast, me proud beauty! . Avast! Blimey! . Ya scallywag! I bought two since I liked it so much . . Aye aye! Ya scallywag! . Arrr! Arrr! I never finished t' first and lost many parts so I built this one).

Flight Report

I had a tough time trimmin' for flight since I goofed on main win' dihedral (not enough). Be careful on this part. Flight trimmin' is important and I advise you t' trim and beat it up before paintin' so that when you paint it you cover up any repairs from test flyin' t' gliders. Ahoy! Blimey! They will usually need a little tail weight and every one I have made OR saw fly has always been left win' heavy, ya bilge rat, therefore, you may need t' add a little weight t' right wing. Begad! Blimey! Also when you trim fly, arrr, ya bilge rat, don't just toss it . Avast, me proud beauty! Blimey! . Arrr! Blimey! . Begad! Blimey! really heave them, like baseballs, straight up. Ya scallywag! Blimey! You may prang it until you balance it but it is worth it once you get it goin' right.

Straight up boost and release and "Man, matey, it is COOOL . Avast, me proud beauty! Blimey! . Avast, me proud beauty! Blimey! . Well, blow me down! " t' watch these things fly and properly trimmed they land within 50 feet o' each other as they circle each other. Word o' advise: they really glide well when trimmed properly. Begad! Do nay fly on a "C" motor unless you have a lot o' field t' fly it in. Begad! You may nay get a glider or 2 back!

We plan t' do a 3-way Drag race next time with 2 others who have this kit and have 6 gliders in t' air at once.

This kit is also beggin' t' be upscaled t' RC size with two radio systems and two pilots for double t' fun!

Overall ratin' is 4 out o' 5, only because o' t' pain o' trimmin' that plastic and t' direction's "blind spot" (at least have t' two steps on t' same page).

Single stage piggy back boost launch glider design with two gliders. The glider's wings act as rocket fins during boost then separate using the ejection charge to deploy the gliders. The rocket booster body recovers with a streamer. The kit includes 4 body tubes. Two larger ones are for the booster and two smaller tubes for the glider fuselages. Also supplied are 3 plastic nose cones and ...

  • Estes A.R.V. Condor By Andy Sola

The A.R.V Condor is a single staged rocket that is about 19 inches long. . At apogee, two drones detach for a gliding return to Earth. Booster returns on a streamer! Recommended motors are B4-2 (First Flight), B6-2, and C6-3. The construction on this rocket wasn't as hard as I had thought it would be. After reading all the reviews I thought it would be impossible to make especially because ...

I recently received an A. R. V. Condor as a gift from my wife. The A. R. V. Condor is an Estes Explorer series rocket (Intermediate level).   This kit was packaged in plastic and came in a box and was probably around $15. 99. All the parts were included and none were damaged.   The instructions were typical Estes and were excellent. The special feature of this rocket is at apogee ...

  • Estes A.R.V. Condor By Carl Tulanko

The Estes Condor is a very slick kit which incorporates a sustainer with two gliders attached to the sides. The glider's airfoils act as fins for the model during boost and detach at ejection, then each glider spirals in for a landing while the main sustainer lands with the aid of a streamer. USAF insignia helps dress up this little beauty and makes it a esthetically pleasing kit to launch or ...
