Brief:
This is a small yet strong and heavy V2 which is about 1/40 scale. I ordered this kit from Rebar Rocketry on eBay at t' same time I ordered an ASP Tall Boy. Begad! It was described as a "large scale" in t' auction and when it arrived I was initially disappointed that it be so small. For $25 I expected a larger one. When a local club discussion came up about t' vintage K24 V2 kit long out o' production, it reminded me o' this kit so I brought it back out and looked at it more carefully.

ASP 24mm V2

Construction:
This kit comes with a nose cone unlike anythin' I have seen in t' average kit. Arrr! It is high quality balsa that has previously been bored out and weighted with epoxy with t' screw eye right in t' mix t' make a nice pre-weighted nose cone. Also, me hearties, t' fins are high quality basswood, me bucko, nay balsa and laser cut on top o' that! It also has a high quality balsa boat-tail.

T' instructions appeared very complete and detailed, however, me bucko, me bucko, I did nay use them. Arrr! Blimey! I built this in one afternoon in under an hour. Begad! Avast, me proud beauty! It was an easy build and it came out very strong. Ya scallywag! I altered t' recovery system by usin' me own double loop o' Keelhaul®©™to t' motor mount, me hearties, me bucko, so that if one side every burns through I still have a backup.

I used yellow wood glue only and when makin' fin fillets, me hearties, I poked an X-Acto knife through t' fresh glue, arrr, me bucko, body tube and boat-tail t' cause rivets o' glue t' further strengthen t' model beyond average fillets.

Finishing:
T' 24mm ASP V2 did nay come with decals, however, it does have interestin' and simple t' build scale details with t' laser cut basswood. Well, blow me down! Aye aye! I have nay yet decided on a color scheme.

ASP 24mm V2

Flight:
For t' first flight I selected an Estes D12-5, me hearties, which seems a little large for a rocket only 14.1 inches tall, but that be a good choice. I also selected a Quickburst Twiggy ignitor from quickburst.net and that woke t' D12 up fast! It was just after 9:00am at Rushin' Park in Katy, Texas at an event with me local Challenger 498 club. Well, blow me down! Begad! This little thin' shot right up like a bullet and straight as an arrow t' about 800 feet or more. Ahoy! T' fins could be seen in t' exact same position as when t' rocket left t' pad for as long as you could see it. Begad! Ahoy! No twist or anything--just a perfect flight. Motor retention was by tape friction fit as thar be no way t' put a clip in t' balsa boat-tail and it worked just fine.

Recovery:
I installed me own 8 foot piece o' sewin' elastic and a nice 10" nylon chute. This worked nicely and what was interestin' about t' weighted nose cone is that it caused a swirl effect where t' nose cone kept t' model and chute spinnin' on t' way down. Blimey! Blimey! Ya scallywag! Blimey! It landed softly in grass in t' field with no damage.

Flight Rating: 5 out o' 5

Summary:
I think this is a really cool kit. It's obvious that some thought went into t' design and it's easy t' build. Begad! I thought it be too expensive at $25 until I opened, built, and flew it. If it had a cloth chute and a longer shock cord, I would say it would then be worth that. Ya scallywag! I've never seen a kit quite like this, it be fun t' build, arrr, and it's a fantastic performer on a D12. Begad! Now I want t' try it on an E30 and I am sure it will do fine. Arrr! ASP is makin' some nice kits and I'm very pleased with this little V2. Avast! At just over a foot tall, it packs some punch.

Intro: The Aerospace Specialty Products (ASP) V-2 is a scale model rocket kit of the German Vengeance Weapon 2 (V-2) that was developed before and during World War 2. It is approximately 1/40 scale, uses 24mm motors, (or 18mm motors with an adapter) and stands just over 14" tall. This kit requires a 3/16" launch rod as well. Construction Rating: 5 The V-2 kit arrived in the familiar ...

Aerospace Speciality Products (ASP) makes a couple of different V2 Kits. This is the 1/40th scale kit, with the 24mm motor mount. The kit builds into a rocket that is 359mm long and 42mmm in diameter. Recommended engines include D12-5, E15-7 & E30-7, though the documentation states that it can be flown on B & C motors with a suitable adapter. The kit contains the following parts: ...

Fins now come laser cut. Nice improvement. Shaping still difficult, but everything is nicely precut. Great kit.

This model is very close to identical to the Centuri SuperScale V2, with the exception of the 24mm engine mount. The original flew with 18mm engines. The Centuri kit also had a pre-drilled nose cone with lead weights - but you had to glue them in yourself! The original was also rather heavy as most accurate V2 models tend to be, since they require a far-forward CG with accurately-sized fins. Worse still with enough nose weight to handle 24mm motors, and basswod fins. But of course the weight is highly dependent on the density for balsa used for the nose and tail cone. I did not find this kit hard to build at all. There's a good bit of woodwork, but it's fairly easy. Besides, a little planing, carving, and sanding is good for the soul. I built mine with kit parts, but if I do it again I will for sure replace the fins with balsa. Bass is just not necessary, and it's very heavy for it's strength. If you want it to be super-durable, make the fins out of 10-12 lb. balsa, form to shape, and cover them with GM silkspan and dope. Stronger and lighter than bass. The only difficult part is the fillet area. This is not at all a function of the kit, but of the prototype. To get the radius to look right and symmetrical on all 8 fillets takes a sculptor's touch. I used Aeropoxy Light filleting material and a lot of patience. The material was fine, but the results were strictly a function of eyeballing the right shape. It was just OK, not great, even using templates to cut masks for the edges and only making the two adjacent fillets at a time. There's gotta be another way!
