Brief:
This be t' Estes Oracle Digital Video rocket. Avast! Blimey! Begad! Blimey! It represents multiple firsts nay only for Estes but for all o' low power rocketry. Well, blow me down! Blimey! This rocket uses 24mm D motors and contains a micro digital video camera in t' nose cone powered by a single AAA battery. Ahoy! Blimey! Aye aye! Blimey! Also, matey, t' Oracle uses a quality nylon chute instead o' a plastic Estes one.
Construction:
T' Oracle kit contains 2 body tubes. T' first is already attached t' t' 4 plastic fins and motor mount and t' second is where t' shock cord is attached. Avast! T' shock cord is rubber instead o' t' elastic material previously used by Estes. Avast, ya bilge rat, me proud beauty! Also included in t' package be t' digital video nose cone. Avast! T' camera is pre-installed and t' lens faces outward with a shrouded mirror t' reflect t' image. That way, you get a perspective as if t' camera be lookin' downward. Begad! T' camera is fairly high quality and is complete with a beeper and LED timer t' let you know when t' camera starts after pushin' t' "start" button. Begad! Movies from t' camera are downloaded into your PC via a USB interface cable that plugs into t' nose.
Since t' Oracle is an E2X kit, it requires virtually no assembly. Begad! All you have t' do is glue t' body tubes together and install t' shock cord and parachute. Ya scallywag! T' top body tube is joined t' t' bottom one with a plastic coupler already installed on t' lower tube. Begad! Ya scallywag! As for t' shock cord, me hearties, it is a normal Estes paper mount.
Finishing:
No finishin' is required for this rocket and good quality decals are pre-applied t' t' fins and nose cone. Ahoy! T' body tubes are wrapped in a good lookin' red and silver coverin' with t' name "ORACLE" printed down t' length o' t' rocket.
Construction Rating: 5 out o' 5
Flight:
T' recommended motors for this rocket are t' Estes 24mm D12-3 and D12-5. Aye aye! I used t' latter for me flights. Avast, me proud beauty! T' prepare this rocket, arrr, t' D motor is inserted into t' motor mount and locked in with a plastic motor retention ring, me bucko, similar t' other Estes RTF rockets. Begad! Avast! Then, t' waddin' and parachute is packed as you would with any other rocket. Arrr! Launchin' this rocket is somewhat different than others. Well, blow me down! Arrr! You must turn on t' camera, shiver me timbers, matey, then hit t' start button about 15 seconds before launch. Ahoy! An audible beeper and flashin' LED signify when t' camera is activated and ready for launch. I flew me rocket at NERRF, matey, t' Northeast Regional Rocket Festival. It flew straight and stable t' about 600 feet, exactly what Estes says. Then t' rocket arched over and t' parachute ejected. Avast! After a fairly soft landin' with t' nylon chute, me hearties, t' nose cone is plugged in t' a PC and downloaded with t' included t' software. Begad! T' video quality was better than I expected and covered t' entire flight. I was only able t' do 2 flights as me camera battery be runnin' low after a long recovery walk. Avast, me proud beauty! Plus, arrr, I was out o' D12s!
Recovery:
T' Oracle's flight recovery is very good. Aye aye! It uses a nylon chute and rubber shock cord for maximum strength o' t' recovery system. Well, blow me down! T' only downside t' t' flight recovery be t' landin' is a bit fast, ya bilge rat, probably due t' t' heavier design for a 24mm rocket.
Flight Rating: 4 out o' 5
Summary:
This rocket is a great, me bucko, arrr, quality kit. Avast, me proud beauty! Blimey! Here are some pros and cons about t' design, me bucko, me bucko, construction, me hearties, and flight characteristics.

This is a 24mm upscale of the (justifiably) insanely popular FlisKits Deuce's Wild! All of the key parts used in this build (the motor mount, body tube, and nose cone) were ordered directly from FlisKits as well. It is built to use all sizes of available and popular 24mm motors. I used the following parts: 1 NCB-70DW balsa nose cone 1 EMK2-24-70C motor mount assembly 1 ...

Estes Industries recently released the first production digital video camera rocket. I had read about the Oracle many months ago on an Internet user forum. This easy to build and great looking rocket with respectable digital video ...

A great rocket when it came out but the software won't run on anything higher than Windows XP. I've tried to get it to run on my older laptop with Vista but no go. Same with my new PC with Windows 8.1. Called Estes awhile back but they were no help as it's a discontinued item and they weren't planning on upgrading the software. To Bad. Collecting dust for the last four years now as I no longer have a PC that will run Windows XP.
