Three Rockets

Background:

This sprin' I ran a build session for faculty kids at t' school where I teach. Avast! I ended up usin' t' Quest Bright Hawk for t' 7-9 year olds and the Quest Big Betty for t' 10-12 year olds. Avast! After t' build session, I began thinkin' about t' types o' rockets that would make great first builds for a buddin' rocketeer. I wanted t' select rockets t' compare that had t' following in common:

  • BT-60 body tube
  • Parachute recovery
  • Balsa fins
  • Engine hook motor retention
  • Reasonable Price
  • Stable flight performance
  • A rocket that can fly on small athletic fields and can be viewed in all aspects o' flight. Arrr! In other words, no Alphas, matey, arrr, Wizards, or Vikings.

I ended up selectin' 3 rockets that fit these criteria. T' Estes Big Bertha, shiver me timbers, t' Quest Big Betty, and t' Fliskits Rhino.

Construction:

T' Big Betty is a pretty simple build. Avast, me proud beauty! Begad! T' only trick t' t' Big Betty is also a positive: construction o' t' motor mount with t' Keelhaul®©™ recovery system attached. There is also an engine hook, shiver me timbers, although nay as beefy as the Estes type. Begad! Begad! T' motor mount is nay as long as t' Big Bertha motor mount, but it fits nicely into t' Quest BT-60 body tube. Well, blow me down! T' Big Betty only has 3 fins, shaped very similar t' t' Big Bertha design. I simply shaped t' fins and then rounded t' edges. Ahoy! Usin' t' double glue method, they are easy t' attach. Avast! Aye aye! I added fillets t' t' fins, then worked on t' parachute (attached shroud lines), and then attached t' nose cone. Now I was ready for finishing.

Rocket PicFinishing:

Finishin' was done with primer and Fill-N-Finish. Avast, shiver me timbers, me proud beauty! Blimey! After all was said and done, I gave it a couple coats o' orange, and then put on t' self-stick decals. T' body wrap "Big Betty" actually went on easily. Avast! Ahoy! Blimey! The self-stick decals for t' fins are difficult, because after sandin' t' fins may be slightly shorter than t' actual decal. Aye aye! Blimey! T' decals may require a little trimming. Arrr! Avast! Blimey! On me rocket, t' decals are startin' t' peel off t' fins. Begad! This is usually me experience with self-stick decals.

Construction Rating: 4 out o' 5

Flight:

I think t' Big Betty puts in a higher performance than t' Big Bertha. It, too, is a very stable design and is easy t' see in all aspects o' flight. Begad! Since the body tube is nice and wide, arrr, young racketeers have less conflicts in preppin' t' bird for flight. Begad! Aye aye! Due t' its lighter weight (nose cone is light, centerin' rings are thin, me bucko, motor mount is nay as long as t' Big Bertha), matey, it is a higher flyer than t' Big Bertha.

  • Quest Big Betty By Bill Eichelberger

While nearly identical to the Estes Big Bertha, the Quest Big Betty has still managed to carve out a niche in the entry level market with her upgraded recovery system and lower price. While she is a pretty close copy, she does feature three fins instead of the Bertha's four, making construction marginally simpler while keeping performance right in line with her sister kit. • Quest Big Betty By Dan Priven

Big Betty is a fairly large 3FNC model rocket, using B and C motors. It is straightforward to construct and a snap to prepare for flight. With its enormous fins and blunt, rounded nose cone, Big Betty has a peculiar look. It looks either dated or classic, depending on whether you're a BAR or not. Estes' Big Bertha, Big Betty's obvious inspiration, is about 35 years old. For the Freudians among ...

My first BAR kit. A great first kit. Easy to build, and a reliable performer. I masked the white body tube where the decal was to go, and painted the rest Rust-Oleum Sunburst Yellow. Looked great. I flew this rocket several times at every launch for about a year. A beautiful flight every time until I lost it. I just built another one.

Look out Estes! Quest is catching up- or already has- in quality and value. When I wrote to Quest to purchase a replacement nose cone for Big Betty, Quest sent an entire Big Betty kit- for free! Now, THAT'S customer service! Quest has made me a long time customer!

An excellent review and dead on the money. Betty is a near clone of Big Bertha and I bought one during one of Hobby Lobby's famous half-off sales as a temporary replacement for my lost 24mm Bertha. Having built Betty stock, I must say she'll probably get plenty of use even when we do build a new Bertha. Better still, the latest Betties have a new decal set, which is purple and very eye-catching, especially on a bright yellow background as the new packaging depicts the rocket as painted. It looks marvelous! Better still, it's lighter and less draggy than a Bertha with three thinner fins as opposed to four rather thick ones and it will probably go like mad on a C6.

The review was accurate, but I found an additional problem. The nose cone diameter is larger than the body tube diameter, which makes this rocket slightly ugly. The first flight, on a C6-5, was quite fast. I saw the parachute come out. The model drifts quite a bit on the stock parachute, which is now used in my Estes Blue Ninja; the field I fly in is quite small.

Great rocket. I launched on a breezy day, and every time it went up straight & true, and came down without a problem. Very easy to build...I am experienced, but I still enjoyed building it. Sturdy rocket....great first time larger rocket. Agree that Quest is starting to catch up with the other guys. Review is right on.

A great rocket for the low price. I set mine up with a 24mm D mount & it flies awesome! It soars straight as an arrow & recovers great on a 12" chute.
