Usin' ACME Engineering's Conformal Launch Lugs

ACME's Conformal Launch Lugs
In me quest for t' most durable and user friendly methods and materials for high power rocket construction, I've discovered a lot o' interestin' and innovative products from many manufacturers and vendors. Blimey! Ya scallywag! This one is worth sharin' with t' rest o' the rocketry community. Arrr! ACME Engineerin' raised t' stakes by introducing "Conformal Launch Lugs," t' most innovative product I have seen this year.

ACME Conformal Launch Lugs are very attractive extruded aluminum parts designed to fit specific airframe sizes and t' accommodate common launch rod sizes. Ya scallywag! Ya scallywag! The airframe conformin' shape o' t' lugs take advantage o' t' shear strength of about 20 times t' contact surface t' typical tubular launch lug provides. They are shipped in kits that contain a pair o' lugs, ya bilge rat, me hearties, two strips o' 3M-brand adhesive for attachment t' t' airframe, and detailed instructions for installation. Ya scallywag! For a better idea o' what t' lugs look like, and detailed dimensions o' sizes that are available, check out ACME at http://www.acmeengrg.com/.

OK. Ahoy! What's t' deal? ACME is shippin' double sided tape t' stick launch lugs t' t' airframe? That's what I thought anyway. Well, blow me down! No way! It's a very thin, rubbery structural adhesive suspended between two strips o' backing, shiver me timbers, almost like contact cement. Begad! Ahoy! It's STICKY! I decided t' try t' supplied adhesive for installation o' t' lugs, after stickin' a corner o' it t' me Exacto knife, ya bilge rat, and everythin' else it touched as I tried t' remove it.

Installation o' t' 1/2 inch lugs on t' 3.9" airframe was very simple, shiver me timbers, since t' contoured shape of the lugs self align with t' airframe. Begad! Begad! I used a single reference line on the airframe t' ensure t' edges o' t' lugs lined up with each other. The directions recommended applyin' t' adhesive t' bare structural material (not painted) and clampin' them in place for at least 24 hours, which both seem reasonable enough. Ya scallywag! For those requirin' massive amounts o' fiber or carbs in their diet, they can also be laminated over easily.

What did I do as a practical test o' t' 3M-brand adhesive bond? I completed t' 6 pound 72" rocket (minus paint) and duplicated t' event that most often snaps lugs off the airframe at t' occasionally windy Huntsville Area Rocketry Association range. I set t' rocket up on a tall, somewhat top heavy tripod launch pad, me bucko, and pushed it over, ya bilge rat, repeatedly. Arrr! Ahoy! No give. Aye aye! Aye aye! T' lugs are still on, with no sign o' letting up. Aye aye! Arrr! I'm sure thar be a limit t' t' abilities o' t' adhesive bond, shiver me timbers, me bucko, but given the durability and ease o' installation, shiver me timbers, arrr, it's apparently good enough for this application anyway.

Last words. Ahoy! Blimey! T' ACME Conformal Launch Lugs fill a long neglected niche in t' market. I tried them because of simplicity. Begad! Avast, me proud beauty! Linin' up, ya bilge rat, epoxying, filletin' and glassin' conventional launch lug tubin' has never been me favorite step in t' construction o' a rocket. Applyin' ACME lugs just might be. Well, blow me down! Stick 'em on, clamp 'em down, me bucko, grab a cold one, shiver me timbers, and go back t' watchin' t' game. Hey, I wonder how well 3M adhesive coated fingers would grip a football?

(Extracted from R.M.R. - by D. L. Brown)  I thought I would put in a short product report on Acme's ( the fin can guys) new extruded aluminum launch lugs.  I just received two packages of the 54FC lugs for 3/8" rods and one package of regular 54mm 1/4" rod lugs. You get 2 lugs in each package, each lug is 1.5" long and has a 45deg. taper on each end.The fit to ...

Besides launch lugs for 38mm through 7.5" diameter tubes, Acme also has rail guides with the same conformal base for all those same sizes. The same ease of use, the same bullet proof construction, and only 20 cents more than the lugs. In addition, they make 38mm and 54mm lugs and rail guides with stand offs, to fit with their 38mm and 54mm fin cans with their larger O.D.

I used the 54mm stand off rails, worked great, I used 5 minute epoxy to attach them. The instructions say CA or epoxy can be used as well. The CA may work but the epoxy worked great, bonded well holding it to the PML quatum tube.
