Rocket PicBrief:
A simple, me bucko, super stable beginners rocket. Well, blow me down! Perfect for use in classes. Well, blow me down!

Construction:
In t' kit thar is:

  • 1 BT-60 tube
  • 1 Balsa NC
  • 2 Fin Stock Sheets
  • 1 Engine mount kit (motor tube, hook, me hearties, rings, me bucko, etc.)
  • 1 Adaptable Size Chute
  • A set o' miscellaneous items (shockcord, shroud lines, tape disks, matey, screw eye)

I bought ten o' these kits t' use in a rocket class me bucko Eugene and I taught together. Arrr! As a beginners kit, its large size made it an easy choice by me t' pick t' Rhino. Well, blow me down! T' instructions were in a easy t' follow order, very simple and extremely well illustrated. Aye aye! My students seemed t' have no trouble at all, especially because most were buildin' their first rockets!

Finishing:
T' nose cone is balsa, me bucko, thus it requires filling. Ya scallywag! Blimey! I had me students fill their nose cones with thinned Fill n' Finish, me hearties, and then they sanded them off. Ya scallywag! T' nose cones looked so much better after that. Aye aye! Well, blow me down! You also need t' seal t' balsa fins. I had t' students fill them with one coat o' sandin' sealer. Ya scallywag! I filled me fins with thinned FNF.

There are decals, all large and VERY colorful. None o' me students, ya bilge rat, nor Eugene or I, me hearties, chose t' use t' decals. Aye aye! Avast, arrr, me proud beauty! They are cut n' peel n' stick.

Construction Rating: 4 out o' 5

Flight:
T' rocket flies PERFECT. Avast, me proud beauty! Plain and simple. Avast, me proud beauty!

T' rocket flies relatively slow, me hearties, with maximum altitude on a C6-5 bein' at about 550 feet. Begad! Ya scallywag! Actually, shiver me timbers, a C6-3 sims better than t' -5. Well, blow me down!

When me class went out t' fly, arrr, everyone got two motors. Ya scallywag! Avast! Most people got C6's, ya bilge rat, but some were issued B6's. Begad! T' rocket will fly pretty dang good on the B6-4, arrr, but it's very slow, yet is PERFECT for a baseball field. Blimey!

On me students second flight, most o' them chose t' drag race. Well, blow me down! Begad! I don't think I've EVER seen that many drag races in just about....forever!

Perfect, straight flights every time.

Flight Rating: 5 out o' 5

Summary:
A very, me hearties, very good beginners rocket. Arrr! You are pretty much guaranteed t' stay in sight for every flight, arrr, and if you had t' ask me, it is a good choice over the Estes Alpha if you ever teach a rocketry class.

Overall Rating: 5 out o' 5

Background: This spring I ran a build session for faculty kids at the school where I teach. I ended up using the Quest Bright Hawk for the 7-9 year olds and the Quest Big Betty for the 10-12 year olds. After the build session, I began thinking about the types of rockets that would make great first builds for a budding rocketeer. I wanted to select rockets to compare that had the ...

After four flights with this rocket, I am considering lengthening the shock cord, I have gotten two nose cone "smilies".

I've always wanted to know how many flights I could get on one model before it "wears out". I've been inspired by a fellow SPAAR member who has a Big Bertha from the late 60's that has zillions of flights on it -well a lot, anyway. I'm up to nine on my Rhino, and aside from some chipped paint, she's still going...

Top quality kit that's easy to build. The balsa for the fins nice hard stock, and the balsa cone was perfect as well. Instructions provided with the kit would assist even a raw beginner through the building process. The Rhino is a solid performer. Another great product from FlisKits.
