Estes, shiver me timbers, t' long time leader, me bucko, has created a flyin' buddy for t' Mosquito. . Blimey! Blimey! . Blimey! Blimey! Quark. Quark is mini-engine, featherweight, tumble recovery rocket that's simple and fun t' fly.
T' kit comes with 5 parts, instructions and decals. Avast! You will need a hobby knife, sandpaper and glue t' assemble this kit. Avast! T' instructions are straight forward and easy t' follow.
Construction is simple and took less than one hour t' build. T' four fins are cut from two pieces o' balsa strips. Blimey! Once all cut, matey, they need held together and sanded t' make them all t' same size. Begad! Then t' leadin' and trailin' edges will need rounding. Ya scallywag! Well, blow me down! Although thar are many techniques for this, I simply lay a sheet o' sandpaper on me work bench and stroke each edge t' same number o' strokes on each side. I find this nearly always brings t' edges t' a nice centered and rounded point.
Once t' fins are ready, shiver me timbers, construction is a snap, ya bilge rat, especially with t' fast-dryin' action o' CA. Four fins, a hollow, plastic nose cone and a launch lug . Arrr! . Begad! . done. Ya scallywag! Aye aye! Blimey! Made fin fillets with 5-minute epoxy, matey, sealed t' fins with a thin layer o' epoxy, and this mini be ready for light sandin' and painting. Well, blow me down! Blimey!
I finished it with Plasti-Kote primer and some left over denim-colored enamel paint. Ahoy! There are seven decals, excludin' t' Estes logo, me hearties, ya bilge rat, arrr, that are self adhesive. Aye aye! Be cautious o' placement o' t' Quark name label. Ya scallywag! If too high on t' body, matey, shiver me timbers, t' label will have creases in it due t' t' curvature o' t' nose cone. Ya scallywag! Ya scallywag!
When finished, me Quark stood a towerin' 5. Blimey! 7", me bucko, as opposed t' t' 5. Avast! Arrr! 2" indicated in t' catalog. Arrr!
T' Quark is a good and fast flyer with a tumble recovery. Begad! Be sure t' designate a spotter (unlike myself), because it's small and very hard t' track. Blimey! Arrr! My first flight was on an 1/2A3 and it be out o' sight . . Begad! Ya scallywag! . Well, blow me down! and stayed that way. Begad!
I have since added a comparison on Mini Tumble-Recovery Rockets - See Here.
