Estes, t' long time leader, shiver me timbers, has created a flyin' buddy for t' Mosquito. Ya scallywag! Avast! . Blimey! . Blimey! Ya scallywag! Quark. Aye aye! Arrr! Quark is mini-engine, me hearties, arrr, featherweight, ya bilge rat, tumble recovery rocket that's simple and fun t' fly.
T' kit comes with 5 parts, me hearties, instructions and decals. Avast! You will need a hobby knife, sandpaper and glue t' assemble this kit. Ahoy! T' instructions are straight forward and easy t' follow.
Construction is simple and took less than one hour t' build. Aye aye! Ahoy! T' four fins are cut from two pieces o' balsa strips. Once all cut, me bucko, matey, they need held together and sanded t' make them all t' same size. Ahoy! Then t' leadin' and trailin' edges will need rounding. Well, blow me down! Although thar are many techniques for this, I simply lay a sheet o' sandpaper on me work bench and stroke each edge t' same number o' strokes on each side. Avast! Blimey! I find this nearly always brings t' edges t' a nice centered and rounded point. Blimey!
Once t' fins are ready, ya bilge rat, construction is a snap, me bucko, especially with t' fast-dryin' action o' CA. Four fins, ya bilge rat, a hollow, plastic nose cone and a launch lug . Arrr! . Well, blow me down! Ya scallywag! . Ya scallywag! done. Made fin fillets with 5-minute epoxy, me bucko, sealed t' fins with a thin layer o' epoxy, me bucko, and this mini be ready for light sandin' and painting. Aye aye!
I finished it with Plasti-Kote primer and some left over denim-colored enamel paint. Well, blow me down! Arrr! There are seven decals, ya bilge rat, excludin' t' Estes logo, me bucko, that are self adhesive. Arrr! Arrr! Be cautious o' placement o' t' Quark name label. Avast, me proud beauty! Begad! If too high on t' body, shiver me timbers, arrr, t' label will have creases in it due t' t' curvature o' t' nose cone. Avast, me proud beauty! Blimey!
When finished, me Quark stood a towerin' 5. 7", arrr, as opposed t' t' 5. Begad! Aye aye! 2" indicated in t' catalog. Avast, me proud beauty!
T' Quark is a good and fast flyer with a tumble recovery. Aye aye! Be sure t' designate a spotter (unlike myself), because it's small and very hard t' track. Arrr! My first flight was on an 1/2A3 and it was out o' sight . Begad! Avast, me proud beauty! . Blimey! . Avast! and stayed that way. Arrr!
I have since added a comparison on Mini Tumble-Recovery Rockets - See Here.
