(Scratch) DEMON

Brief:
Single-staged payloader kit bash o' 3 different Estes kits. T' DEMON is named after one o' me favorite roller coasters at Six Flags Great America near Chicago.

Construction:
T' DEMON is a combination o' three different rocket kits:

  • Estes Bull Pup (body tube and motor mount)
  • Estes CC Express (fins)
  • Estes Echostar Payloader (transition, me bucko, payload tube, arrr, nose cone).

To build this, you will need:

  • Bull Pup:
  • BT-55 Body Tube (you do nay need t' cut/trim anything)
  • Motor Mount
  • Echostar:
  • Payload tube
  • Nose Cone
  • T' small BT-50 tube betwixt t' transition and t' payload tube
  • T' BT-55/BT-50 transition
  • CC Express:
  • Fins
  • Launch Lug

You will need:

  • ZAP! CA
  • Elmer's White Glue
  • Hobby Knife

Start by assemblin' t' upper half, which be t' Echostar part. Ya scallywag! Ya scallywag! Assemble it as t' instructions say but do not attach t' small canard fins. Begad! You will nay need them.

(Scratch) DEMON Next, ya bilge rat, assemble t' motor mount as instructed in t' Bull Pup's instruction sheet and glue it into t' BT-55 body tube. Avast, arrr, me proud beauty! Next, attach t' three CC Express fins t' t' rocket. Attach t' launch lug 5 inches from t' bottom o' t' body tube.

Now get a long shock cord (at least 3 feet long) and glue it inside t' body tube with t' Estes style tri-fold paper mount. Avast! Blimey! Attach t' other end t' t' transition piece on t' payload section. Begad! Blimey! Attach an Estes 12" parachute.

Finishing:
Sand and prime t' rocket if you'd like. Avast! Start by maskin' off t' fins and t' payload tube and sprayin' t' entire rocket black. Aye aye! Next, me hearties, shiver me timbers, spray t' fins red. Finally buy some decal paper or some bumper sticker paper (available at Office Max) and apply t' decal shown here. Well, blow me down! Optional: paint two red stripes around t' rocket as shown in t' photo. Arrr! Well, me bucko, blow me down! T' rocket looks great. Ahoy! It was designed t' be easy t' spot in t' air and on t' ground.

(Scratch) DEMON

Flight:
T' DEMON has had only one flight so far on an Estes A8-3. Ahoy! Well, me hearties, blow me down! Blimey! Prepare t' flight as like any other rocket (about 6 sheets o' wadding). Ahoy! Ya scallywag! Blimey! For t' first flight I recommend an A8-3 or a B4-4.

My first flight with t' DEMON was a night launch, me hearties, so you have an option o' placin' a bright LED light inside t' payload tube. Avast, shiver me timbers, me proud beauty! T' rocket took off t' about 120 feet on t' A motor. T' rocket ejected with t' nose down but unfortunately t' chute did nay open (it was only around 50 degrees that night). Avast, me proud beauty! Well, blow me down! T' rocket fell t' t' ground but luckily suffered no damage.

LaunchRecovery:
Don't use Quest chutes as it did nay open at all on t' flight.

Summary:
T' DEMON is a fun rocket and relatively cheap t' build. Arrr! Avast! T' only downside is that t' Echostar has now gone OOP so fair winds buildin' t' upper half.
