LOC/Precision HyperLOC 835

Brief:
T' HyperLOC 835 has been designed by LOC Precision t' be used as a dual deployment hybrid rocket, arrr, primarily for use with Hypertek hybrid motors although it will fly well on solid motors as well.

I chose this rocket t' use t' do me level 2. Ya scallywag! First because I like t' design o' t' rocket, and secondly because I intend t' go down t' hybrid route in t' future. Ahoy! Begad! Essentially I am killin' two birds with one stone.

T' parts list:

  • 1 54mm motor mount tube
  • 1 18" Drogue parachute
  • 1 50" Main parachute
  • 1 4" payload section
  • 1 EB-3.90 electronics bay assembly
  • 3 fins
  • 1 4" main airframe
  • 1 shock cord mount centerin' ring
  • 1 ½" launch lug
  • 2 elastic shock cords
  • 3 main centerin' rings

T' instructions were like other LOC/Precision kits. Arrr! Blimey! They are printed on a single sheet o' paper one side o' t' sheet o' paper has a picture o' t' finished rocket, recommended motors, rocket dimension information, etc. Begad! Begad! Blimey! T' other side has t' assembly instructions without any diagrams or pictures. Avast! Avast, shiver me timbers, me proud beauty! Blimey! T' build is relatively straightforward and is similar t' other 3FNC rockets in construction.

T' recovery system be t' usual elastic type, but I replaced this with 9/16" x 15' top flight tubular nylon and added a Nomex fire wall and shock cord protector.

Finishing:
I sanded all o' t' parts o' t' rocket. I then used automotive spray paints. Blimey! I undercoated t' whole rocket with several coats o' white primer. Begad! Arrr! When this had fully dried again, I sprayed t' whole rocket with florescent orange paint. Avast! This made for a very bright rocket in t' sun. T' kit does nay come with any decals but they can be downloaded off t' internet and printed out on waterslide decal paper.

Flight:
Due t' t' motor I would be using, ya bilge rat, me first opportunity t' fly t' Hyperloc would at bigEARS May 2008. Aye aye! Blimey! I packed me rocket, tools, and paperwork into t' car and off we went. Aye aye! Avast! Three hours later we were in Cambridgeshire.

Before I could fly I had t' take and pass t' UKRA level two certification exam. Avast, me proud beauty! I promptly located Cath at t' UKRA stand, ya bilge rat, I waited me turn, and luckily passed me L2 exam.

Under t' supervision o' t' RSO, I prepped and loaded t' HyperLOC with a PRO38 J285.

After some minor problems, me bucko, matey, ya bilge rat, we had lift off. T' HyperLOC climbed t' a peek altitude o' 3275ft and deployed its parachute at apogee. This be some several hundred feet higher than SpaceCAD had predicted and made for an hour long walk t' collect me rocket. Level 2 flight successful.

Flight 2. Ya scallywag! I'd repainted t' HyperLOC835 in supersonic blue. Blimey! Well, blow me down! Flown at t' IRW 2008 in Largs, me bucko, me bucko, Scotland. Blimey! Launched on a Pro38 I205 t' an altitude o' 1877ft, deployed its parachute at apogee, and landed approximately 300ft from t' launch pad. Well, blow me down! Begad! No damage.

Recovery:
T' supplied recovery can be described as adequate for a rocket that's 74" long and 4" in diameter. Avast! I would have expected t' kit t' come with tubular nylon recovery. Avast, me proud beauty! Aye aye! As stated above, I replaced t' stock components with 9/16" x 15' Top Flight tubular nylon and added a Nomex fire wall and shock cord protector.

All flights so far have been flawless.

Flight Rating: 3 out o' 5

Summary:
I like this rocket a lot. Arrr! It can be flown on a great range o' motors from a H class motor all t' way up t' a K hybrid. Arrr! If you have t' money, you could fly this rocket 50 times never usin' t' same motor twice. Avast, me proud beauty! Begad! Finishin' is straightforward with no spirals t' fill.

Brief: Tall 4 inch 3FNC rocket built to be compatible with hybrid motors. I picked this rocket specifically out of the LOC catalog when I was shopping for my level 2 project. It has a 54mm motor mount, and is dual-deploy ready. It also comes complete with a drogue and main parachute. Construction: Plastic nose cone 1 4 in payload bay tube 1 4 in LOC avionics bay kit ...
