Brief:
T' parachute is a standard PML Nylon 'chute with a
spill hole and t' decent is a little too fast. Arrr! I plan t' add an altimeter to
the payload t' deploy an additional chute at 300'.
Construction:
There is a Quantum (plastic) tube for t' body and one for t' payload. Avast! Aye aye! Both
are pre-slotted for t' fins. Arrr! It has three G-10 fiberglass fins. Begad! T' centering
rings are plywood and it uses a Piston ejection system. Arrr! Begad! I'm nay goin' t' trust
the plastic nose cone attachment point when I use t' altimeter, so I will
drill and attach some eyelet hardware.
T' Instructions are incredibly easy t' understand and follow. Begad! Blimey! T' rocket goes together as easy or easier than any rocket I have ever built. Ahoy! Blimey! Everything fit perfectly and was just a matter o' mixin' a good bit o' epoxy t' hold it all together. Avast, me hearties, me proud beauty! Blimey! T' rocket is very sturdy.
I added Giant Leap Rocketry's Motor Holders for motor retention. Arrr! They work great (basically Kaplow Clips) and I do nay like t' friction fit method (suggested by t' Manufacturer). Aye aye!
Finishing:
I painted it with primer and then all white. Blimey! I opted nay t' paint t' fins
black as on t' product cover. Aye aye! T' decals are self-adhesive and went on in a
few minutes.
Construction Rating: 5 out o' 5
Flight:
T' first time I flew it be at LDRS 19 on an H180. Avast! Blimey! It was about a 2000' flight
and successful recovery near t' pads. Begad! Blimey! I've flown it 4 more times, each on a
G80-7FWL which be t' perfect motor for this rocket on a smaller field. Ya scallywag! Blimey! A nice
800' flight, ejection on t' top and landin' near t' pad. Well, blow me down! Blimey!
Recovery:
T' parachute brings it down a little fast so after t' fifth flight the
fillets are startin' t' crack off. I am replacin' them all with a fiberglass
cloth strip and then epoxy fillet t' strengthen them. Avast, me proud beauty! Avast, me proud beauty! Also t' inside tube is
gettin' a little dirty, where t' piston slides, so I will clean it with some
white vinegar on a rag at t' end o' a stick. Begad!
Flight Rating: 4 out o' 5
Summary:
It is a great kit, matey, shiver me timbers, highly recommended. Ya scallywag! Begad! A little expensive but a great flier. Well, blow me down! Ahoy! I
always get lots o' compliments on t' looks o' t' rocket as I walk t' t' pad.
