Squirrel Works Pie in The Sky

Brief:
This has got t' be one o' t' neatest "saucer" designs I've seen. It flies good (well, for a saucer), and looks tasty. Ya scallywag! Blimey! It's nay every day you see a flyin' pizza.

Construction:
A quick 2 days after me online order, me hearties, t' nicely packed box arrived with t' followin' parts in t' baggie:

  • Plywood disk
  • Motor tube
  • Launch lug
  • Motor block
  • Adhesive decal
Squirrel Works Pie in The Sky

Thankfully thar's another review ahead o' me that adequately described the laborious construction process, so I'll submit an abbreviated version. Suffice it t' say that even though I type fairly quickly, I'm long-winded enough that this review will take longer t' post than t' rocket took t' build, shiver me timbers, including finishing! I might have invested 5 minutes o' effort in this, me bucko, plus another 5 t' paint, shiver me timbers, shiver me timbers, and most folks will choose not t' even bother painting.

Construction consists o' gluin' t' motor block into t' motor tube, addin' a launch lug, ya bilge rat, me hearties, and lettin' it dry. Then glue t' assembly into t' plywood disk. Blimey! Let dry. Begad! Aye aye! You're done.

Finishing:
OK, I cheated on this and didn't bother fillin' t' tube spirals, me bucko, nor did I do more than a cursory sandin' o' the underside o' t' plywood disk. Avast, me proud beauty! Ahoy! I shot everythin' with one coat o' gray primer, sanded it down a bit with 400 grit sandpaper, me bucko, then shot everythin' one more time with a flat black paint I had leftover form a project a few years ago. Well, blow me down! Blimey!

When t' paint had dried overnight, arrr, I peeled off and applied t' pizza decal. It fit perfectly. Begad! Done.

Construction Rating: 5 out o' 5

Flight:
First flight was goin' for t' max with a C6-0. Blimey! Avast, me hearties, me proud beauty! Blimey! While I occasionally fly saucers with non -0 motors, shiver me timbers, arrr, I would definitely nay recommend it for this model. Avast! Ya scallywag! Blimey! T' non-zeros have ejection charges that can get pretty hot, me hearties, and they'd be likely t' char t' pizza decal. Aye aye! Avast! Blimey! Definitely stick with -0s, which are much less violent.

Squirrel Works Pie in The Sky T' flight wobbled and wiggled along a fairly vertical path, slightly weathercocked into an 8 mph wind. Begad! Avast! It flew just like a spool/saucer rocket. Ya scallywag! Nay exactly one o' me peak performers but exactly what a saucer/spool does.

Recovery:
T' pizza be still goin' up a bit when t' -0 sputtered out, arrr, but it smartly turned back over and started the head-over-heels tumble back down. Blimey! It landed in t' tall grass about 30 yards downwind from t' pad, me bucko, without a trace of damage (and motor still in).

Flight Rating: 5 out o' 5

Summary:
What's nay t' love about this? For $5 (less than t' shippin' charge), you get a cool spool rocket that can be built in 5 minutes, me hearties, shiver me timbers, flies fine, ya bilge rat, takes virtually no prep or post-flight time, can be flown on small fields, and t' pizza sticker is a great touch.

I know thar are folks who are just anti-saucer in general and I lean a bit that way myself, ya bilge rat, but if you have even a slight interest in spool or saucer rockets, pick up a few o' these. Well, blow me down! Blimey! You won't regret it.

Brief: It's a flying pizza. What else can be said? Construction: The kit contains one engine tube, one thrust ring, one 1/8" launch lug, One large laser cut pie ring, and one large pizza sticker. This was extremely easy to build. Took less than 5 minutes. Glue the thrust ring inside the engine tube. Then draw a line straight down the tube. Glue the launch lug on the ...

An easy to build odd-roc that can be built and painted in about 30 minutes. It's a high drag disc design that features tumble recovery. It makes a perfect small fields rocket. It would be extremely difficult to find a more simple rocket to assemble. The design features a grand total of five parts, laser cut lite ply disc, engine tube, engine block, launch lug, and the pizza decal. The Pie ...

Brief: Mmmm, fresh oven hot pizza--and an oddroc to boot! That's right, a flying pizza and it also flies on 18mm B6-0 and C6-0 motors and tumbles upon recovery. However, you might not want to build one if you are currently having any pizza cravings. Construction: This kit is extremely simple and only contains six pieces if you count the pizza decal and instruction sheet. In ...

The review is accurate. No real skill is required to assemble the kit which fits me perfectly. I painted my pan in left over Semroc Sky of Gold paint. The made in Italy stencil on the bottom of the pan is a nice touch. I used an Estes C 6-0 at the Freedom Launch in Orangeburg. My "pie" had a "Mary Poppins" recovery in that it floated down like an umbrella.
