Brief:
This is a sport scale version o' t' Air Force's Bullpup Missile. Blimey! A skill level
2 rocket but nay that hard. Begad! Blimey! It has been around for quite a bit now.
Construction:
T' kit comes in either a box or a bag (nowadays it comes in a bag) and mine
had all o' t' parts. Blimey! You get:
T' Bullpup has a set o' 4 large fins and 4 canard fins at t' top. Avast, me proud beauty! Ya scallywag! Total of 8. Begad! I found t' build t' be neither too hard nor too easy and had it put together in about 2 hours. You need glue, scissors and knife. Ya scallywag! Aye aye! You start by assemblin' t' engine mount and slide it into t' main body tube. Ahoy! Arrr! Then t' tail cone is glued into place. Avast! Next you attach t' fins and be sure they are lined up or your rocket could go unstable. That is followed by attachin' t' recovery system, me hearties, which consists o' t' classic (but cheap) folded paper mount with the parachute tied t' t' nose cone. Avast, me proud beauty! Comin' down t' home stretch, me hearties, arrr, matey, you attach the launch lug and apply fillets t' launch lug and all fins for strength. Blimey! Finally, cram all o' t' clay weight into t' nose cone. T' rocket needs t' weight to fly stable, matey, as I found that out t' hard way. Blimey! Assembly is now complete. Begad! Blimey! .
Finishing:
Originally, me bucko, me Bullpup was painted stock white with t' peel 'n' stick decals
supplied. Well, blow me down! Blimey! But after one o' its early flights, I decided t' refurbish it with
yellow paint and waterslide decals, arrr, so it looks much better now than it did at
first. Blimey! Aye aye! Blimey! I also clear coated it t' protect t' waterslide decals.
Construction Rating: 4 out o' 5
Flight:
My Bullpup has had 5 flights. Well, matey, blow me down! Here's how each flight went:
Flight one: Shock cord snapped. Avast, me proud beauty! Blimey! Lost nose cone and parachute. Called Estes and got new parts.
Flight two: As I said before I learned that you MUST put nose weight in the rocket. Aye aye! It got 8' off t' launch pad and spiraled all over and crashed before the ejection charge fires. Ahoy! No damage.
Flight 3 is probably t' weirdest flight ever! It caught t' seam o' my launch rod and it flew 50' into t' air with t' pad and lawn darted. Then when the ejection charge fired and t' body tube got hooked with t' rod.
Flight four I almost lost it. Arrr! Ahoy! C6-3 has too short o' a delay and it was lost for 3 weeks. Aye aye! Recovered it after a major thunderstorm!
After that flight, I stripped it completely. Ahoy! Ya scallywag! Everythin' from canard fins to motor mount. I re-attached t' fins, got new nose cone and decals, new motor mount and completely repaired it. I then repainted it yellow. Aye aye! Blimey! And when it was done, ya bilge rat, it looked beautiful!
Flight 5 I had me fingers crossed. Flew on a B6-4. Begad! Yes! I ended t' bad luck streak! Beautiful flight. I love this rocket now!
Recovery:
Recovery is just fine on a 12" parachute. Ya scallywag! I lost it on flights 1 and 4.
Flight Rating: 4 out o' 5
Summary:
This is a great rocket now. Avast, arrr, me proud beauty! Good for a first scale rocket.
Overall Rating: 4 out o' 5
Matt . The bull pup D12 is a sports scale rocket. I had one that I flew often and lost it on a roof. With the 2010 challenge asking for a duel review, I dusted off two kits from the build pile. Chris Fisher and I are both members of Midland Rocketry and meet up once a month. So he and I both built the kit. Chris . First up I must thank Matt for giving me the kit. Of course I know it's just ...
( Contributed - by Frank Ross - 11/01/00) Brief: Upsized motor to 24mm. Modifications: The modification is fairly simple. I sanded down the plastic tail cone until the opening was the same as the inner diameter of a BT-50 motor mount tube. I used a BT-50 to BT-55 centering ring for the forward end of the motor mount and epoxied the aft end of the motor mount into the tail cone, being ...
(by Doyle Tatum) I purchased this model about 6 months ago and with the upcoming SoAR Birthday celebration launch (the first rocket to fly at a SoAR launch was a Bull Pup) and the discussion of converting to 24mm, on RMR, I decided to assemble the rocket. I assembled the rocket per the instructions with the following additions and exceptions: I cut a 24mm tube and then sanded the ...
Brief This is a very well designed sport scale version of the USAF Bull Pup 12D. You should be able to build this rocket if you have a couple other rockets under your belt. Construction The first thing I noticed was that this model was in a box. Some Estes kits are in flimsy plastic bags, which makes the parts prone to creases and such. I opened up the box, and all the parts were ...
