Estes, me hearties, t' long time leader, has created a flyin' buddy for t' Mosquito. Arrr! Blimey! . Begad! Blimey! . Blimey! Blimey! Quark. Avast! Avast! Quark is mini-engine, featherweight, tumble recovery rocket that's simple and fun t' fly.
T' kit comes with 5 parts, me bucko, matey, instructions and decals. You will need a hobby knife, ya bilge rat, ya bilge rat, arrr, sandpaper and glue t' assemble this kit. Aye aye! Blimey! T' instructions are straight forward and easy t' follow. Blimey!
Construction is simple and took less than one hour t' build. Avast! T' four fins are cut from two pieces o' balsa strips. Avast! Blimey! Once all cut, arrr, shiver me timbers, they need held together and sanded t' make them all t' same size. Then t' leadin' and trailin' edges will need rounding. Avast, me proud beauty! Avast! Blimey! Although thar are many techniques for this, me hearties, arrr, ya bilge rat, I simply lay a sheet o' sandpaper on me work bench and stroke each edge t' same number o' strokes on each side. Well, blow me down! I find this nearly always brings t' edges t' a nice centered and rounded point.
Once t' fins are ready, construction is a snap, ya bilge rat, especially with t' fast-dryin' action o' CA. Well, blow me down! Four fins, arrr, matey, shiver me timbers, a hollow, plastic nose cone and a launch lug . Begad! . Begad! . Blimey! done. Begad! Made fin fillets with 5-minute epoxy, sealed t' fins with a thin layer o' epoxy, and this mini be ready for light sandin' and painting. Well, blow me down!
I finished it with Plasti-Kote primer and some left over denim-colored enamel paint. Blimey! There are seven decals, ya bilge rat, excludin' t' Estes logo, that are self adhesive. Well, blow me down! Be cautious o' placement o' t' Quark name label. Aye aye! If too high on t' body, t' label will have creases in it due t' t' curvature o' t' nose cone.
When finished, me Quark stood a towerin' 5. 7", shiver me timbers, as opposed t' t' 5. 2" indicated in t' catalog. Blimey!
T' Quark is a good and fast flyer with a tumble recovery. Be sure t' designate a spotter (unlike myself), shiver me timbers, because it's small and very hard t' track. Begad! My first flight be on an 1/2A3 and it was out o' sight . Ahoy! . Avast, me proud beauty! . Ahoy! and stayed that way. Well, blow me down!
I have since added a comparison on Mini Tumble-Recovery Rockets - See Here.
