Brief:

T' Ion Pulsar, ya bilge rat, by Custom, arrr, is a fairly easy model t' build. Ya scallywag! Begad! T' model specs. Begad! Arrr! are; length 17", matey, Dia. Arrr! Avast, me proud beauty! 1.325", Weight 1.4 oz. Begad! with recommended engines B4-4, B6-4, C6-5.

Construction:
T' kit comes in a bag that contains two kraft paper body tubes, shiver me timbers, cardboard paper centerin' rings, me bucko, plastic nose cone, me hearties, die cut balsa fins, plastic 12" chute with elastic shock cord, decals, and t' basic motor mount with a metal engine hook.

T' instructions are very easy t' follow and each step has a correspondin' illustration. Avast, me proud beauty! Blimey! I followed t' directions exactly as they were written with t' exception o' usin' Titebond wood glue instead o' white glue as t' instructions recommend. Titebond is an excellent general-purpose adhesive and gets tacky in just a few minutes. Ya scallywag! Blimey! Assembly consisted o' buildin' t' motor mount, markin' t' bottom body tube for fin placement, me bucko, gluin' t' two body tubes together, attachin' t' fins and dowels t' t' tube, shiver me timbers, arrr, and addin' t' launch lug. Avast! Blimey! Avast, me proud beauty! Blimey! Anticipatin' a rough landin' on t' fins and dowels I made sure t' use ample glue on these joints.

Rocket PicFinishing:
T' finishin' instructions have you mask off t' two body tube rings located in t' middle o' t' model and spray paint t' rocket silver. Ya scallywag! Begad! I just happened t' have a can of, shiver me timbers, Plaski-kote brand, shiver me timbers, me hearties, pewter spray paint on t' shelf and decided t' use it, shiver me timbers, thinkin' pewter would be appropriate. Arrr! Begad! This paint is actually a metallic lookin' silver with small metal flakes. Avast, me proud beauty! Avast! T' paint be perfect for this model! Since t' nose cone is black plastic I choose nay t' paint it. Arrr! This kit comes with 84 decals! Way too many decals for a skill level 2 project. Begad! Most o' t' decals are clear plastic with small black dots t' look like rivets, matey, which should look great on a silver model. Begad! Unfortunately, me hearties, thar are only four rivets per decal. Avast! A better solution would have been a single body wrap decal.

Construction Rating: 5

Flight:
T' recommended engines are B4-4, ya bilge rat, B6-4, matey, C6-5. Avast! Blimey! I flew t' model for t' first time on a B6-4 and t' flight was straight with ejection at apogee.

Recovery:
Recovery be as predicted with a good 'chute deployment and gentle decent, but a 1 t' 5 mph wind gust made this rocket drift at a fast rate. Begad! Well, matey, blow me down! Blimey! When t' model contacted t' ground one fin came off and two o' t' dowels separated from t' fins. Avast, me proud beauty! Arrr! Blimey! Upon inspection it appears I did nay have a great glue joint on t' damaged fin.

Flight Rating: 5

Summary:
I like this model. Ahoy! Although it is nothin' more than three fins and a nose cone, t' different size body tubes with t' gold center rings make it unusual looking. Ya scallywag! Begad! I would suggest t' builders t' use epoxy on t' fins and dowels or they won't last long. I would have rated this model an overall five, arrr, but t' number o' decals knocked it down.

Overall Rating: 4

I finished mine with Metallic Blue spray paint and didn't bother with the decals. I have only had the chance to fly it once. I used an Estes B4-4 and had a picture perfect flight. The dual sized body tubes and doweled fins generate a lot of positive comments on the field. I do find the doweled fins are easily damaged.

Decals, decals, decals. It took over 3 hours to apply them all -- it looks nice, but, sheeeeesh! I had a large number left over, too. I modified the construction to include a small baffle system as well as mounting the shock cord inside the lower body tube (with thick Kevlar®). Hasn't flown yet, but it looks nice. The dowel fin extensions will definitely snap off at some time.

Nice Rocket. I flew it twice. Then I found it on the floor in the garage, and one of the fins was missing. To this date, I never found it. And the decals were fun, but the thin film made it difficult.

Nice looking model. Bought the kit recently and it may have changed slightly from your review - had to paint the nose cone. Way too many decals. I cut back on those big time but I did add the ovals on the fins and some "rivets". Haven't flown it yet but I plan to soon.

The unit looks better with longer dowels on the fins. I extended mine to 2.5" and it makes the rocket look more "sleek". Rustoleum has a Nickel paint that looks nice on this rocket. It's easier to paint the rings before they are glued to the rocket. I like the Ion Pulsar so much that I've 2x upscaled it with 29mm motor mount. It flew for the 1st time at NARAM-43 on a F52-8. Very nice flight, but the parachute 24" was a bit small and I broke all the dowels on landing. I've started a 3x upscale with 38mm mmt.

This is a nice rocket. I didnt go through the hassle of all the decals but it looks good any way. I use C6-5 engines on it and they work perfectly.

Built this kit for my son and was not that hard to build. We did not use the decals. This has been a very good rocket and has about 30 flights on it and have never broken the dowels. This rocket has always flown straight up and every flight has been with a C6-5. I will buy another so that when this one does break we will have another. Great rocket.

The decals are a pain. There are just too many of them. Also you need a clearcoat over the top ov them otherwise the very quickly peel.

love this kit. The only 2 things I did differently was that I put the dowels on so they pointed up. The other thing that I did was paint it bright orange. It really looks good. The dowels pointing up really helps with landing damage.
