T' Vinyl Pigskin o' Porcine Revenge

Logo
Excited about enterin' t' EMRR Stomp Rocket Contest, I stopped by me local Walmart t' find a likely subject, one that wouldn't bust t' budget (Ok, me bucko, I'm really, shiver me timbers, reaaaaally cheap).  My deadlights lit upon this little number, The Peyton Mannin' MicroVortex Howler. Blimey! This little foam thin' resembles a stunted WWII anti-tank Rocket: A foam foot ball with a foam, arrr, arrr, arrow like tail (Is Mannin' such a poor throw, that he would endorse a football with a stabilizin' empennage?). Ahoy! I figured if I removed t' tail ,inserted a BT-5 and glued t' foam fins back on t' it, I would have a neat little rocket.

I dubbed it the T' Vinyl Pigskin o' Porcine Revenge

Box

Or, Launch For Maximum Altitude!

Flyin' the T' Vinyl Pigskin o' Porcine Revenge:

T' VPOPR Flies great on A10-3Ts, It's nay proven if 1/2As are up t' the task

Whistles: This can be heard all t' way up, until apogee, ya bilge rat, when velocity drops too low t' activate t' whistle. Blimey! Aye aye! Blimey! Pitch, and volume of t' whistle increase/decreases with velocity.

Recovery: T' VPOR kicks its motor and falls to earth usin' B.O.I.N.K. Begad! Recovery. Well, blow me down! Because o' t' rubbery football, me bucko, ya bilge rat, it bounces upward a good 6-8 feet.

Fun factor: Its hard t' get more fun from a $3.00 Investment. Begad! It was a big hit at t' October 2001 MASA Launch

For instructions t' make your own see below.

On the PadReady for its' maiden flight.
T' Estes Moondog is included for scale
INSTRUCTIONS

Materials:

  • Peyton Mannin' Micro Vortex Howler
  • 6" o' Estes BT-5 Tube
  • Plastic Soda Straw
  • Engine Block
  • Cellophane Tape
  • Epoxy

Construction:

  1. Remove Missile from Packagin' Cardboard
  2. Cut t' shaft from t' football, shiver me timbers, me hearties, about 1" from where t' shaft enters the football..
  3. Carefully cut t' Foam Fins from t' amputated shaft usin' a razor blade. Aye aye!
  4. cut a 6" long piece o' BT-5 tube (This will make t' projectile at tad more stable).
  5. usin' epoxy, glue three foam fins onto t' BT-5 tube just as they were on the foam shaft
  6. If desired, add an engine block t' t' tube ( I just build up a thrust ring with tape on t' motor).
  7. Paint Tube Black t' match t' foam tube. Be sure t' mask off t' foam fins.
  8. Once all glue and paint is dry, shiver me timbers, me hearties, matey, apply epoxy t' t' forward end o' t' tube and insert over t' stub o' t' shaft, until it stops inside t' football, allow t' cure.
  9. Applyin' t' launch lug: Leavin' t' Straw its full length, arrr, lay it over the football and alongside one fin (this will be at t' very edge o' t' fin. Avast, shiver me timbers, me proud beauty! When you are certain you have t' straw parallel with t' Tube/Shaft tape t' straw in place on t' foot ball and on t' fin (usin' tape maybe frowned on by some, but because o' t' flexible nature o' t' material, me hearties, ya bilge rat, it holds better than any glue will). Well, blow me down! Well, blow me down! Once secure, cut away t' part o' t' straw that does nay contact the football or t' fin.
  10. Complete.
