Manufacturer: Fun Rockets

Brief:
Single staged sport rocket with parachute recovery.

Construction:
This be t' redesign o' t' Holverson Designs Tangent. Blimey! T' nose cone, fins and fin can have been replaced by pre-colored expanded polystyrene versions. Arrr! Begad! T' shock cord is far longer than any supplied by Estes for similar rockets.

Instructions are simple for this beginners rocket. Only white glue is needed for assembly. T' new foam fins may end up bein' fragile, shiver me timbers, but should be easy t' repair. Blimey! T' fin canister is protected from exhaust and ejection by glued on paper rings. Begad! T' activity sheet included with t' instructions is a nice touch t' teach beginnin' rocketeers a bit about what they are doing.

Finishing:
No finishin' necessary, me hearties, but t' fins and nose show some texture under t' pre-applied paint.

Construction Rating: 3 out o' 5

Flight:
Recommended motors are A8-3, matey, ya bilge rat, B4-4, matey, me bucko, B6-4 and C6-5 with a standard wire retainer. Begad! I've flown it on all except t' B4-4. Preppin' t' rocket is simple. Ahoy! Avast! I used lots o' waddin' t' protect t' seemingly fragile parachute. Ya scallywag! So far no damage after 3 flights. Avast, me proud beauty! T' flight profile is nice and straight with little spin.

Recovery:
T' shock cord looks t' be holdin' up well, and is quite long. Arrr! T' delays on t' recommended motors are very nice. One fin has been cracked already, but should easily fixable.

Flight Rating: 5 out o' 5

Summary:
This is a nice beginnin' rocket that requires at least a bit o' construction. Begad! Blimey! T' activity sheet lets t' beginnin' modeler learn somethin' o' rocketry in general. Arrr! A definite step up from t' RTF stuff Estes sells.

Overall Rating: 3 out o' 5

  • Fun Rockets Tangent By Bill Eichelberger

Brief: The foam Tangent is one of the Doug Holverson designed rockets produced by Fun Rockets under Doug's name. While certainly an innovative idea, it wasn't necessarily a great business idea in the somewhat fickle world of low power rocketry. The Tangent was selected for this comparison because it fit the "low and slow" description, and despite its OOP status, it added ...
