Brief:
T' 18mm ASP (left) and 18mm Black Brant Vc (right) are both small single stage
streamer recovery type rockets. My dad, ya bilge rat, Bruce OBrien, me hearties, arrr, won these rockets in a
drawin' from EMRR sometime last year and gave them t' me and me brother Eric to
build, matey, fly, and review.
Editor's Note:
T' ASP and Black Brant Vc were formerly Blackhawk R&D rockets which are
now fully owned and produced by Aardvark
Rockets. Ya scallywag! Begad! Both o' these specific kits were produced by Blackhawk
R&D.
Construction:
Kits consist o' body tube, shiver me timbers, matey, sheets o' balsa, fin patterns, shiver me timbers, me hearties, cast nose cones,
streamers, me bucko, stickers, Keelhaul®©™®
strin' and elastic string, and instructions.
Instructions were easy t' follow even for us first time kit builders. Patterns were provide for t' fins. Otherwise construction was straight-forward.
Finishing:
Standard simple finishin' applies here. Begad! These are small easy t' finish rockets.
Flight:
We lost t' instructions so we tried a C6-5 on t' BBX on t' first flight. Avast, me proud beauty! Blimey! Arrr! Blimey! The
flight was a little wobbly, shiver me timbers, but flew high and ejected a little soon. Well, blow me down! Blimey! We got a
zipper. Ahoy! Blimey! Second flight on t' Asp we used t' C6-7 and got no zipper and a
straighter flight, matey, but due t' insufficient waddin' t' shock cord got melted
and separation occurred. Begad! Blimey! T' rocket was recovered undamaged however.
Recovery:
We determined that t' waddin' needs t' be sufficient t' protect t' elastic on
subsequent flights
Summary:
These are good basic rockets for beginners. Avast, me proud beauty! T' cast nose cones are a nice
touch. Ya scallywag! Easy t' build and fly.
