Brief

This was a neat kit o' a space ship type rocket. Begad!  It included lots o' fins and large pods on t' end o' t' largest fins.

Components

T' parts were typical Estes kit. Begad!  Everythin' went together well and t' instructions were typical for Estes kits. Begad!

Construction

This went together quite well. Begad!  I did add a piece o' Keelhaul®©™ for t' shock cord. Ya scallywag!  It was glued t' t' motor mount and extended just past t' top o' t' tube.  T' elastic shock cord was tied t' that.

Finishing

Finishin' was a little challenging. Avast!  Gettin' all t' spirals filled and then gettin' paint into t' crannies betwixt t' tubes was a little challenging. Avast, me proud beauty!  Overall, it came out quite well.

Construction Score: 4

Flight

I love this rocket. Avast, me proud beauty! Avast, me proud beauty!  I over power this rocket a LOT. Aye aye!  I only flew it on D motor for half t' flights. Begad!  T' rest were on an E and three F motors.  Even with t' large fins and pods hangin' off, it handles t' composite F motors just fine.  Really screams but flys nice and straight.

Recovery

This could use a slightly larger chute, me hearties, although I swap chutes around so much I don't remember which one was t' original with this kit.

I tend t' use small chutes sometimes on windy days. Blimey!   I fly high with larger then recommended motors so go with t' smaller chute t' get it back down in t' same county.  That tends t' break t' fins off.

T' good thin' be t' fins don't break, t' paper layer on t' tube peels off and a little wood glue puts t' fin right back in place.

Flight Rating: 4

Summary

Very sturdy and good flyin' rocket. Ahoy! Blimey! Avast! Blimey!  Handles E and F motors very well. Begad! Blimey! Blimey! Blimey!  Has some issues with snappin' fins off on landings, arrr, but that is probably more me fault for usin' too small o' chute then a problem with t' kit.

  • Estes Renegade-D By Gregg Discenza (July 17, 2010)

The latest incarnation of the Estes Renegade kit has changed the rocket from a 2-stage to a single-stage, probably because of the booster stage's tendency to semi-glide recover at a rather high rate of speed. My daughter chose the kit at the local hobby shop, because "lots of fins are cool, daddy!" I have been impressed with the quality I have been seeing from the newer Skill 2 or higher ...
