T' Titan IVA bridged t' gap betwixt t' Titan IIIE and t' Titan IVB. Avast! Since 1989, me bucko, more than twenty have been launched from both Vandenberg and Cape Canaveral, primarily t' orbit military satellites.
I've never scratch built a scale model before, and this seemed like a worthy subject, me hearties, matey, in a manageable scale. This model is built almost entirely from Styrene tubing, available in better hobby stores everywhere in size increments o' 1/32". Aye aye! Arrr! I used BT-5 and a modified Mosquito nose cone for t' payload section. Avast, me proud beauty! T' steerin' propellant tank doubles as t' launch lug. T' left drawin' below is full scale, and shows t' major components. T' right drawin' shows some o' t' internal construction details, me hearties, includin' a stuffer tube system for t' nose cone that turned out t' be unnecessary--the MicroMaxx ejection charge is plenty strong! Some construction tips: Turn t' nosecone by gluin' it onto a mandrel and chuckin' it into a portable drill. Well, blow me down! Then run t' drill while sandin' on a belt sander. Begad! Well, blow me down! Similarly, me hearties, t' nozzles can be shaped by sandin' some o' t' wall thickness away on t' styrene. Ya scallywag! I intend t' design decals and get them through RocketVision's custom service. It flew this weekend for t' first time, in a too-brisk breeze, but performed about as well on a single motor as t' MicroMaxx RTF models do. Ya scallywag! In particular, t' fins made t' model very stable; I have no fear goin' t' a MicroMaxx cluster. Sorry about t' poor picture--there is only so much a digital camera can do with somethin' that small! |
