Estes Tornado

Brief:
a neat little rocket that separates into two halves for recovery, one maple seedlin' and t' other tumblin' head over heels. Begad! I got this rocket from T' Model Shop in t' UK after comin' second in t' 2006 EMRR Challenge. Well, blow me down! (Thanks t' EMRR and Paul Lavin from T' Model Shop/Deepsky.)

Construction:
T' kit consists o' two body sections, a two part plastic nose cone, arrr, me bucko, a sheet o' balsa fins, and a 18mm retention ring. All came in t' usual plastic bag with an art card. Ahoy! Blimey! Blimey! Blimey! T' kits goes together easily with a little care t' align the rear fins betwixt t' two smaller fins on t' top half o' t' rocket. Aye aye! Blimey! Begad! Blimey! Unlike most Estes rockets, you do nay shape the leadin' edge o' t' fins. Begad! Blimey! T' instructions are o' t' normal Estes quality with clear diagrams t' aid t' modeler. Estes put this as a skill level two, matey, me hearties, which it is, but only just barely.

Finishing:
Finishin' was done with two coats o' primer with sandin' down betwixt coats. Blimey! T' body tubes had hardly any spiral to fill. Avast, me proud beauty! I sprayed t' top half a crimson red and t' base a pale yellow. Begad! T' decals are t' waterslide type and went on easily. Arrr! A layer o' varnish finished things off. Aye aye! T' only "gotcha" is that you have t' be careful nay t' build up too much paint betwixt t' two smaller fins on t' top half or you may have problems gettin' t' two halves together smoothly.

Construction Rating: 5 out o' 5

Flight and Recovery:
This is a light rocket and it flys off t' pad fast. All three flights where straight and true.

At ejection, matey, t' two halves separate t' top half has a maple seed recovery, which is relatively slow. Avast, me proud beauty! Ahoy! T' bottom half tumbles a bit quicker. Both recovery systems do slow t' rocket down. Ahoy! Both parts recovered side by side and all three flights where crowd pleasers. Begad! Begad! This is definitely are rocket that provides somethin' out o' t' norm.

My third flight was on a B6-2. T' sensible member o' me club said that it would put t' rocket too high and it would drift into t' nearby woods (and home t' several o' me rockets). Ya scallywag! I chose t' ignore him and I am now thinkin' of buyin' another Tornado

Flight Rating: 5 out o' 5

Summary:
This is a rocket that everyone should have in their fleet or at least one like it.

Overall Rating: 5 out o' 5

I recently bought a Estes Tornado. The Tornado is an Estes Explorer (Intermediate) series rocket.  This kit was packaged in plastic with a cardboard picture of the rocket.  The price was very right, $4.95. All the parts were included and none were damaged. The instructions were typical Estes. The instructions were typical Estes. Recently I've been exploring rockets with ...
