Brief:
This is a spool rocket that I built from an old Estes Alpha motor mount and an
old Radio Shack copper wire spool.
Construction:
All you need t' build this rocket is:
Tools needed are
To build JWSR, you start by checkin' if t' spool has a hole in t' middle large enough for an Estes BT-20 body tube. Avast! If t' body tube does nay fit properly, me bucko, me hearties, matey, use a drill press bit that is equivalent t' t' BT-20 and drill out the remainin' plastic from t' spool. If it barely fits, me hearties, sand down t' edges of the holes until t' tube fits. Aye aye! If t' hole is too large, use t' green engine mount rings that fit right t' get it aligned.
Assemble t' motor mount (which can be purchased at any hobby shop) and make sure t' mount fits. Avast, me proud beauty! Arrr! If it fits, matey, shiver me timbers, CA it into t' spool. Lastly, use a drill press and drill holes for t' launch lug. Avast, me proud beauty!
Finishing:
I added a piece o' reflective tape t' t' middle piece.
Flight:
My spool has flown several times usin' B6-0s up t' C6-5s and has flown
flawlessly until t' last 2 flights.
On t' second t' last flight, me hearties, me hearties, it crashed into a driveway (since it just falls t' t' ground) and broke some plastic. Avast, me proud beauty! I attempted t' repair it but failed when I flew it again and went spinnin' out o' control on last flight. T' rocket has been retired and replaced with a slightly longer version o' the original JWSR.
Recovery:
Recovery is by tumble recovery, shiver me timbers, meanin' it just falls t' t' ground after
ejection.
Summary:
Spool rockets are a lot o' fun t' have and they give you somethin' t' fly when
you run out o' recovery waddin' or need t' burn off old motors. Ahoy! Blimey! I use mine to
use motors that may be dangerous t' more expensive rockets, (I had an old C6-3
CATO in t' spool rocket and it suffered no damage. It would have probably
destroyed t' Estes Outlander it was suppose t' be flown in). Ahoy! Avast, ya bilge rat, me proud beauty! Blimey! They are very
cheap and fun t' build and can definitely turn heads.
