Brief:
This video set has been much anticipated. Aye aye! Blimey! This two disc set contains video footage from both t' 2003 NYPOWER and NSL launches. Ahoy! Disc one contains high power footage from NYPOWER. Begad! Disc two contains some mid power footage from NYPOWER and t' complete NSL footage.

NY Power X and NSL 2003 DVD

Both discs were sprinkled with hummer, shiver me timbers, matey, me bucko, awesome slow-mo replays, pad cam shots and on-board video shots. Begad! Most o' t' flights have t' motor size written in t' corner o' t' screen. Ya scallywag! Some o' them have comments or notes at t' bottom of t' screen. Ya scallywag! It really helps t' viewer know what's goin' on while nay being obtrusive. T' best part o' t' videos be t' intro. Aye aye! It's a music video segment with intense rapid succession highlight footage accompanied by equally intense music. Arrr! T' whole introduction segment really got me heart pounding.

NYPOWER X
T' NYPOWER X footage has Ed Miller's 3-stage world record Monocopter flight and several level 2 and 3 certification flights. Arrr! It also contains some very interestin' CATOs includin' a flyer forgettin' t' put a Pro 38 in its motor case. Arrr! There were many more hybrids at this launch. A few scenes show some WWII vintage aircraft takin' off and landin' at t' adjacent airfield.

NSL 2003
T' footage from t' NSL is shorter than t' NYPOWER footage because NYPOWER is a longer event, arrr, arrr, and t' weather kept most rockets grounded at t' NSL on Saturday. Well, blow me down! No footage from t' Monday launch was included. T' NSL footage contains several gliders, lots o' level 1, me hearties, 2, and 3 certification flights. There seemed t' be more core samples at t' NSL, and a few o' these were shown. One o' t' highlights was an awesome long burn minimum diameter rocket that reached 7,000 feet. Begad! I never tired o' seein' beautiful NEPA scenery.

Overall Quality
T' editin' is first class and professional, includin' DVD menus on both discs. These videos were clearly nay a tape-to-tape basement hack job. Ahoy! T' camera work is a little shaky at times, shiver me timbers, but it's much better than any home footage I've ever seen. Avast! Begad! T' picture quality is superb, ya bilge rat, with great color, shiver me timbers, perfect contrast, and good framing. Blimey! Well, blow me down! T' sound quality captures t' buzz o' most o' t' hybrids and t' roar o' some o' t' bigger motors. Well, blow me down! T' sound is good but is a little on the thin side.

You can pick up a copy for $24.95 plus $2.50 shippin' at Hangar 11 or $25.00 plus shippin' at Pratt Hobbies.

Summary:
This is how rocketry's done here on t' East Coast!

PROs:

  • These discs are great quality and contain some excellent footage.
  • It concentrates on t' high power end o' t' hobby but includes just enough low power t' make everyone happy.

CONs:

  • They could use more background music t' fill t' quiet times. Blimey! Blimey!
  • T' sound could be a little better.
  • Does nay have NSL Monday coverage.
