This was me first Semroc kit, so it was all new. Ya scallywag! Well, matey, blow me down! It's a reproduction o' an old Centuri kit with a few updates.
There is an exploded-view diagram so you can see how t' pieces go together. Avast! It also serves as a parts list showin' how many o' each part should be there.
T' parts were well laid out. Begad! T' fins came on a laser-cut balsa sheet. Ya scallywag! Begad! This rocket also has a balsa nose cone for all your purists.
One o' t' interestin' features about this kit is that it can fly A through D motors. Avast, me proud beauty! It's a 24mm kit, me hearties, but includes a motor adapter for A-C motors.
There weren't any problems with assembly. Well, blow me down! I had one concern about t' motor adapter, arrr, since t' last 'centerin' ring' hangs out o' t' back o' t' kit. Avast, me proud beauty! But that's what engages t' engine hook on t' model when you use smaller motors. Arrr! Ahoy! It actually worked quite well.
I took t' kit t' a local school field t' launch. Avast! Since it's a small field and it was windy, arrr, I flew it with an A8-3 for t' first flight. Well, blow me down! It got up t' about 110', arrr, matey, give or take. Avast, me proud beauty! However, t' chute didn't eject, me bucko, and t' rocket came down flat enough that I assumed thar would be no damage. I didn't get that lucky - one o' t' fins snapped. I never use A motors, so I don't know if t' nose cone was too tight, shiver me timbers, or if that motor doesn't have a big enough ejection charge. Avast! Probably a little o' both.
All in all, arrr, shiver me timbers, t' Semroc Magnum Hornet is an easy kit t' build and fly.
Centuri Engineering Company was started in the early 60s and was one of the early pioneers in the model rocket industry. Centuri was sold to Damon Corporation in the late 60s and maintained their product line separately from Estes until 1983.
