Brief:
T' ERINT Cluster is a scratchbuilt off scale o' one o' t' Patriot family of surface t' air missiles. Ahoy! ERINT means Extended Range INTerceptor. Blimey! Avast, shiver me timbers, me proud beauty! T' cluster means it uses a 13mm Deuce type motor mount for propulsion.

Construction:
Parts list:

  • 1 FlisKits EMK2-13-55c motor mount.
  • 1 FlisKits NCB-55DW (This is a substitute. T' one I used is homemade.)
  • 9.5" length o' BT-55.
  • 1" length o' 1/8" launch lug
  • 18" length o' 1/8" elastic for shock cord
  • 1 12" plastic parachute
  • 4 1"x4" strips o' mat board or 1/16" balsa

This is a fairly easy rocket t' build with a few tips used t' make it better. Avast! Avast! Put together t' motor mount as per t' instructions that come with it and lay out t' fins on t' body tube for a four fin rocket with t' wrap provided. Arrr! Avast, me proud beauty! Make sure t' launch lug line goes up at least six inches. Ya scallywag! Avast! T' fin lines should be at least four inches. Avast! Install t' motor mount.

I like t' lightly sand t' body tube along t' fin lines before installing. First cut a 1 3/8" piece from each piece o' fin stock. Begad! Then cut a 2" piece from each. Begad! Take t' 2" x 1" pieces and put a mark 1 1/2" from one end. Aye aye! Avast! Cut from t' mark t' t' end. Ya scallywag! Arrr! This will create t' leadin' edge of t' fins. Ya scallywag! For fin gluing, ya bilge rat, matey, I used EMRR fin tip #9 and double glue jointed all of t' fins.

Startin' with t' 1" x 1 3/8"piece, arrr, t' 1 3/8" be t' root edge. Begad! Blimey! Blimey! Blimey! Hold these 1/8" up from t' base o' t' rocket. T' double glue joints o' medium CA help very quickly. Blimey! Blimey! T' forward fins are spaced 3/16" in front o' t' o' t' smaller fins with t' 2" side bein' t' root edge with t' sweep goin' back.

With t' CA dried, I always apply fin fillets as per EMRR fin tip (click here). Begad! The launch lug is cut into 2 equal pieces. Aye aye! Arrr! One is placed 1/4" from t' base and t' other is placed at 6" from t' base. No special reason for 2 lugs other than I just like 2 small lugs opposed t' one lug in t' middle.

Finishing:
I wiped down t' rocket with a slightly damp cloth as recommended in EMRR finish tip (click here). I like t' use a white primer on all parts because it makes the colors pop better and they seem t' cover easier. Aye aye! T' whole thin' get a gloss white base coat. Then I used a metal gray for t' fin and bottom with a royal blue for t' top. Well, blow me down! These are t' basic colors o' t' Army version, matey, matey, but not really at true scale finish. Avast, me proud beauty! Blimey! I also added a black pin stripe just for fun.

Flight:
T' parachute is attached t' t' body by t' folded paper method with a small screw eye into t' nose cone. Begad! Blimey! I attached t' chute about 3 inches below the nose cone.

If usin' a balsa nose cone, some weight might have t' be added t' t' nose. Since I used poplar t' make mine, matey, it was plenty heavy enough.

T' first flight took place at a QUARK launch in late September on a pair of A3-4Ts. Begad! With a generous amount o' dog barf aboard I loaded her onto pad one. At ignition, both motors lit at t' same time. Begad! Straight up with a little bit of arcin' into t' wind at t' top. Blimey! Ya scallywag! T' 4 second delay was just right for this rocket. Ya scallywag! Avast!

Flight 2 be at a local ball field on a pair o' 1/2A3-2Ts. Avast! Blimey! Nay very high but straight with deployment a little early.

Flights 3,4,and 5 were all with A10-3Ts. Avast! Nay t' best choice as t' delay was a early but all flights had both motors ignite and recovered safely.

Summary:
This was a fun build. Aye aye! Blimey! Nothin' difficult and I like t' FlisKits canted 13mm Deuce style motor mount. Arrr! Blimey! Blimey! Blimey! This is definitely goin' t' be a pull out at every launch and fly rocket.

One con t' t' 13mm motors be t' lack o' choices. Ya scallywag! This is a one motor rocket. Begad! Blimey! Blimey! T' A3-4T be t' only choice.
