Background:
This sprin' I ran a build session for faculty kids at t' school where I teach. Well, blow me down! I ended up usin' t' Quest Bright Hawk for t' 7-9 year olds and the Quest Big Betty for t' 10-12 year olds. Blimey! Avast, me proud beauty! After t' build session, ya bilge rat, me hearties, I began thinkin' about t' types o' rockets that would make great first builds for a buddin' rocketeer. I wanted t' select rockets t' compare that had t' following in common:
I ended up selectin' 3 rockets that fit these criteria. Arrr! T' Estes Big Bertha, t' Quest Big Betty, matey, shiver me timbers, ya bilge rat, and t' Fliskits Rhino.

Construction:
T' Big Bertha is your standard Estes Skill Level 1 bird. T' instructions are adequate, me bucko, and t' parts are usually average t' above average in quality except for t' shock cord (too short). Avast, me proud beauty! T' motor mount is easy t' construct, and t' engine hook is simple t' add t' t' motor mount. Ya scallywag! What is nice about the Big Bertha be t' length o' t' motor mount. This reduces t' overall amount of the body tube that needs t' be pressurized at deployment time. Begad! It also makes it easier for clumsy hands t' handle. Begad! T' fins are die cut and require minimal sandin' t' get a good finish. Begad! Ya scallywag! Remember, I tried t' build t' Big Bertha as a beginner would. Arrr! Usin' t' double glue method, it is easy t' get t' fins on the body tube. Avast! I added fillets t' t' fins and added t' very long launch lug to the body tube. Blimey! As be t' case with many Estes kits, shiver me timbers, t' parachutes may arrive already with shroud lines attached. Well, blow me down! Avast! All I needed t' do be add t' shock cord usin' t' tri-fold method, matey, attach t' parachute and attach t' shock cord to the nose cone.
Finishing:
Finishin' consisted o' primin' and Fill-N-Finish. I then painted me Big Bertha with a 60s design. Had I finished t' rocket as a skill level one bird, I would simply have given it a solid coatin' o' black and put on t' one simple self-stick decal sheet. Since this was t' Big Bertha, a classic, ya bilge rat, matey, I did give myself t' liberty o' designin' it me way, rather than t' simple black.

Flight:
I have flown me Big Bertha on B6-4s, arrr, C6-5s and even a D21-7. This bird always turns in a solid performance flight after flight. Ahoy! Avast! It is very easy to prep and pack t' parachute. With t' size o' t' rocket and t' big swept back fins, t' Big Bertha can be a great demonstration model t' be enjoyed in all stages o' flight and recovery. Begad! Ahoy! This is probably one o' t' reasons why it is a classic.

Brief: Everybody's favorite prom date, the Estes Big Bertha, is a rocket that seems to wind up in every fleet at one time or another. While there are a lot of other rockets in her size range that equal her low, slow, and always stable flights, there's something to be said for building and flying the original. Bertha's getting a little long in the tooth these days and in need of an ...
(by Paul Gray) Background The Big Bertha is a classic rocket built and flown by thousands of people around the world since 1965. Its was designed to have a rather impressive size and to develop the skills of people who are advancing themselves further in the hobby of model rocketry. Because of its size and performance, it is a great rocket to fly on a football field on C motors, ...
