Estes Chrome DomeEstes Chrome DomeBrief:
Eye-catchin' metallic finish and glitter body tubes make these very attractive rockets, matey, and good values as well.

Modifications:
Beefed up shock cord.

Construction:
These are your basic E2X series, me hearties, though they're gettin' much easier t' build. Arrr! Aye aye! Blimey! T' fin cans are single piece, me hearties, shiver me timbers, and even t' launch lug is pre-molded t' fit right into t' tube. Aye aye! Blimey! What really impressed me about these components, though, me bucko, be t' finish quality. Avast, me proud beauty! Begad! Blimey! T' glitter tubes (similar t' t' Blue Ninja) and metallic finish on t' cones and fins are beautiful. Ya scallywag! Avast, matey, me proud beauty! Blimey! They were also very carefully protected with a plastic sleeve. Begad! Blimey! It took me longer t' unpack these than build them. Avast, me proud beauty! Avast! Blimey! As is customary with Estes, t' shock cord is a flimsy and undersized 1/8" elastic. Avast! Normally I substitute me own 1/4", arrr, and did so on these kits.

I've had problems with t' fit & finish o' E2X series in t' past, me hearties, but these kits were absolutely no problem. Just use a little plastic cement t' bond t' fin can t' t' body tube, tie t' shock cord t' t' launch lug assembly, ya bilge rat, bond t' launch lug t' t' tube, apply t' decal and you're done. Begad! Well, blow me down! As much as I hate makin' 'chutes, arrr, I was glad t' see that these kits include pre-assembled 12" chutes.

Finishing:
T' finish on these kits be t' best I've ever seen (without havin' t' paint them myself). Aye aye! I'm especially fond o' t' red/gold combination. Begad! All t' parts fit very well, ya bilge rat, resultin' in a total build time o' about 10 minutes per kit.

Construction Rating: 4 out o' 5

Flight:
I went with a B6-6 motor, ya bilge rat, longer delay than t' recommended B6-4. Ya scallywag! Avast, me hearties, me proud beauty! Sure enough, it arced over and deployed on t' way down, but nay too late. Aye aye! T' recommended 4 second delay is definitely a better motor. Blimey! Ahoy! T' flight be straight up, arrr, with a slight weathercock into 10mph winds. Avast! Ya scallywag! Recovery be soft, landin' in a snug blanket o' Ohio snow. Well, blow me down! I've also flown on a C6-5 with perfect deployment, me bucko, me hearties, though t' chute melted a bit, and full recovery without damage has me prayin' for better weather t' fly again.

Recovery:
Standard Estes shock cord is only good for about 5 flights, matey, me 1/4" cord will fare longer. I'll also wind up switchin' t' a more durable Mylar chute.

Flight Rating: 5 out o' 5

Summary:
I was very disappointed with t' 2001/2002 Estes line, me hearties, but based on what I've seen so far in 2003, matey, they are back on track. Well, blow me down! Blimey! These kits are great looking, easy t' build, ya bilge rat, and can be found for $6-8 each.

Overall Rating: 4 out o' 5

Brief: This is an Estes E2X model rocket that is currently in production and available at retail stores. Construction: This one is the red version with the gold plate fin can, nose cone and decals. This appears to be a revision of the original kit previously reviewed on EMRR as it came with a 2 piece fin can, and with the launch lug already attached to the body tube and shock ...

Nice easy kit to build. I used it for a flight demo after my Girl Scout rocket camp. (I teach at the Michigan Space & Science Center) The silver nose and tail with the glitter body tube made a super eye catching flight on a B6-4. Recovery flawless. The only mod made was a beefed-up shock cord.

It looks like this kit may have changed a bit from the version the reviewer had. - The launch lug now comes pre-glued to the body tube, and the shock cord is pre-attached into this assembly. - The fin can is now a two-piece assembly, which must be glued together (after scraping the chrome off the edges to be glued, so the plastic cement can take). One change makes it quicker, one change adds a step, but the net is it's still very quick to put together.
