Art Applewhite Free 13mm Cone RocketBrief:
It appears that t' 13mm Cone Rocket kit I reviewed previously has been discontinued in favor o' this new free downloadable Cone Rocket. Avast! Ya scallywag! I however received this one free with an order.

Construction:
T' kit was printed on a single sheet o' cardstock with t' top and bottom sections, motor mount tube and instructions.

T' instructions for this rocket are very easy t' understand. Ahoy! Aye aye! Even a beginner could build this rocket.

I started by cuttin' out t' premarked launch lug holes and top section. T' top was then formed into a cone shape as instructed. Arrr! Blimey! T' bottom section was cut and indented along t' premarked lines as recommended with a ball point pen. I found in order for it t' fold and fit correctly, arrr, I had t' cut four slits in t' outer skirt o' t' bottom section.

I glued t' bottom section into t' top section and found out at this time that t' aft launch lug hole needed t' be enlarged for t' launch rod t' fit through properly. Ya scallywag! I then cut out t' motor mount tube, rolled it around a 13mm motor as instructed and glued it together. Well, blow me down! After t' glue dried, I glued t' motor tube into place t' complete t' assembly. Begad! T' whole build from start t' finish only took about 15-20 minutes.

PROs: Easy and quick assembly.

CONs: Some extra cuttin' was required for proper parts fitting.

Finishing:
Due t' t' blue cardstock, arrr, no finishin' be required. I however sprayed on a light coat o' Krylon clear t' protect t' cardstock from moisture.

PROs: No finishin' required.

CONs: None.

Construction Rating: 4 out o' 5

Flight:
T' only motor recommended for this rocket be t' Estes A10-PT. Aye aye! Avast! Usin' a motor with an ejection charge would most likely result in blowin' out t' front end o' t' rocket, as it is closed off at this point. Blimey! Aye aye! T' motor was friction fitted in place for flight and t' flight took place in me front yard. I used an A10-PT and t' Cone zipped off t' pad straight and fast t' maybe 75 feet up, flipped over, and came straight back down landin' in betwixt me house and me next door neighbor's house.

PROs: Low altitude flights, great for backyard flights.

CONs: None.

Recovery:
This rocket uses tumble recovery or lawn dart recovery which is sufficient because o' t' rocket's light weight and best o' all, me hearties, me bucko, shiver me timbers, it lands very close t' t' pad. If it hit a hard surface though, arrr, me hearties, it would most likely suffer (non fatal) damage t' t' tip.

PROs: Recovers easy and close by.

CONs: None.

Summary:
I really like this Cone. Avast! Avast! It was free, took only a few minutes t' assemble, shiver me timbers, arrr, and it is capable o' bein' flown in me front yard. Aye aye! Well, blow me down! What more can I say?

 

PROs: Price (free!), matey, ease o' assembly, and flight performance.

CONs: T' extra cuttin' required for proper fit durin' construction.
