Brief:
T' Renegade is a cool staged rocket featurin' a tumble recovery for t' booster and a parachute recovery for t' 2nd stage. Avast, me proud beauty! Aye aye! It also flies great as a single stage rocket.

Construction:
T' kit came with a whole lot o' parts, matey, matey, includin' two lengths o' BT-60 body tubes (one o' them be much shorter, o' course, for t' booster section), me hearties, a tube coupler, me bucko, matey, a couple different types o' nose cones, two BT-20 engine mount tubes, two short BT-5 tubes and two BT-50 tubes for t' boosters, 8 fins, shiver me timbers, me hearties, a decal sheet, matey, 4 centerin' rings, elastic shock cord, me hearties, a 12" parachute, me bucko, me hearties, as well as some other little couplers and adapters.

T' instructions were very easy t' follow and all I used be Elmer's white glue. Begad! This actually was me first rocket ever. Ya scallywag! Ya scallywag! My wife gave it t' me as a birthday gift and I was thrilled with its looks. Buildin' t' model went well but thar was one thin' that lookin' back, me bucko, I would have changed: t' "boosters." T' "boosters" that attach t' t' booster section fit betwixt fins on either side and are easy t' attach, but after t' glue dried I tried t' fit t' two stages together and found it t' be a tight fit since those pesky "boosters" were nearly touchin' t' upper stage. Aye aye! This really became a factor once a couple layers o' primer and paint were applied. Ya scallywag! Ahoy! Aside from t' "boosters" though, ya bilge rat, everythin' else was fine with kit assembly and all parts fit perfectly.

Finishing:
I primed t' entire rocket with grey primer, then painted t' whole thin' with a blue-black pearl paint. Arrr! After t' paint be dry I put on t' decals, shiver me timbers, then sprayed it all down with Krylon clear coat. Arrr! Decals went on fine, arrr, matey, but I had t' do a little trimmin' on t' fin decals. Ya scallywag! Again, me hearties, t' paintin' is where t' "boosters" were a problem. Avast, me proud beauty! It was difficult gettin' paint down into t' spaces betwixt t' "boosters" and t' fins/body tube. Ya scallywag! Begad! Anyway, matey, arrr, it worked out. Avast! Blimey! Paintin' t' "boosters" prior t' attachin' them t' t' lower stage would take care o' that headache.

Construction Rating: 4

LaunchFlight:
Motor retention is friction fit with maskin' tape. Avast! Blimey! T' prep it, matey, you use Scotch tape and tape t' booster motor onto t' bottom o' t' upper stage motor. Begad! Then you fit it into t' upper stage. Once that is securely in place, you slide t' lower section into t' upper part (the booster section has a motor block in t' lower engine tube t' prevent t' motor from fallin' out t' back). Begad! I first flew this baby on a C6-0 in t' booster and a C6-7 in t' upper body. I wanted t' see it fly, me hearties, and that's what it did. Rather slow lift-off due t' t' weight and a great first flight t' an unknown altitude.

Next flight be on t' same configuration and it again flew perfectly. Since those first few flights I have always used a C6-0 in t' booster section but have tried B6-4s and C6-5s in t' upper section as well. Ahoy! Avast, me hearties, me proud beauty! I have flown it many time as a single stage on C6-7s and C6-5s. Blimey! I even tried it once on an A8-3, ya bilge rat, but that be a nail-biter and t' chute barely deployed with 20 feet t' spare. Ahoy! Avast! Luckily I flew it over a grassy baseball field and it suffered no damage.

This is a picture o' t' Renegade launchin' after bein' modified. Ya scallywag! T' booster is bein' powered by 3 Estes D12 motors, and t' sustainer flies on a C6. Aye aye! Flight was spectacular t' well over 1200'. Booster suffered damage t' one fin durin' launch, but it is repairable and will fly again

Recovery:
T' shock cord attaches t' t' inside wall o' t' body tube with regular white glue. Begad! I have never had it pull away or fail in any way and this rocket has flown over a dozen times. Aye aye! T' upper stage recovers via a small 12" parachute. Aye aye! It comes down faster than I would like, but I have nay lost any fins yet and we fly in t' desert in southern New Mexico where t' dirt is rather unforgiving.

T' booster uses a tumble recovery but it is so stable that it comes down rather straight and fast, causin' me t' wince every time. Begad! T' booster section began showin' serious signs o' wear after about t' 4th flight, me bucko, when t' BT-50 tubes began crumplin' slightly. Ya scallywag! Blimey! I still flew it and it did fine. Well, blow me down! Finally, however, arrr, t' shock from t' 8th tumble recovery caused t' motor mount centerin' rings t' fail and break away. Well, blow me down! Blimey! T' booster section itself was fine, ya bilge rat, arrr, except t' BT-50s were also destroyed. Aye aye! Begad! Blimey! Fins were all still good and t' upper stage was still intact.

Flight Rating: 3

Summary:
I like this rocket and it looks cool when fully assembled for staged flight. Begad! It is nice t' be able t' fly it as a single stage in case you are out o' booster motors (or money). Begad! It flies great either staged or single and all flights are fairly straight. Avast! T' abuse that t' booster takes is a drag. Some form o' a streamer recovery would be great if you could swin' that one.

Brief: The Estes Renegade kit is a very sharp looking 2-stage kit that looks great in any fleet. It looks good on the shelf and it looks good in flight and staging. It flies on 18mm motors and used tumble recovery for the booster and a parachute for the sustainer. Construction: The Estes Renegade kit contains the following parts: 1 - BT60 x 18" Body Tube 1 - ...

Brief: Very cool looking, two stage design. The upper stage can also be flown as a single stage rocket. Construction: There are a fair number of parts in this kit. Tubes included are two BT-60 for the airframe, two BT-50 side pods for the booster, two BT-20 for engine mount tubes, and two short lengths of BT-5, again for the booster. Also included are various couplers, adapter ...

The instructions for gluing the motor mount into the top stage are poor. They don't leave enough room behind the motor mount for the first stage coupler. I had to trim the coupler so it only extends 3/16" into the top stage, resulting in less-than-ideal stability in the joint. The motor mount must be moved forward from the recommended glue points. Preassemble... The booster not only is too heavy, it's somewhat stable, with my first flight lawn-darting after partial engine ejection. Fortunately the ground was very soft, and no parts broke. One of the COSROCS veterans recommended adding a streamer to the booster, which will be done for the second launch. There's plenty of room for it. Launched in 10mph wind, the rocket weathercocked severely, which was exacerbated by the B6-0 booster. The top stage engine was a little late firing, so it flew almost horizontally (apogee at around 300 ft), but ejection occurred in the air because the top stage is fairly light. This is a nasty looking rocket and drew lots of attention on the pad. Recommend flying with a C booster and launching on a calm day straight up if possible.

I read this review prior to building my Renegade. I didn't modify it at all, but too found that gluing the boosters on after painting would be a good idea. I used Elmer's on the entire rocket, which was fine. The fins are all still on and have never cracked. However, the booster section took a beating every time it came down. It is supposed to tumble, but it is too stable and on the last flight the motor mount assembly totally failed upon landing. It can be rebuilt, and I think I will build it to accept a D motor to help speed up that slow lift-off.

I am currently building this kit. I too was concerned about the booster stage being damaged after falling to the ground, so I decided to convert mine to a single stage, "D" powered rocket. I currently have both stages glued together with the set of 3 fins in line. I am very anxious to finish this kit and get it in the air.
