Atlantic Rockets - Iris
(by Mark Sunderland)

T' Atlantic Rockets Iris is one o' me favorite rockets, because it is always a good stable flyer. It flies well with a variety o' motors.

Construction:

T' instruction sheet be very basic, shiver me timbers, me bucko, but if you've built a few kits, this shouldn't be a problem. Blimey! I saved t' Motor mount tube and rings they gave me for another rocket, and made some 29mm centerin' rings and got some 29mm tubing. Ya scallywag! This rocket really uses t' extra power. Ya scallywag! If you build it lightly, shiver me timbers, shiver me timbers, it will still stay under a pound, ya bilge rat, shiver me timbers, as mine did. Ya scallywag! T' couplers were pathetically short, me hearties, but when you use epoxy and pre-fit with tape, ya bilge rat, me bucko, they hold up just fine. T' shock cord mount is basically a good concept, shiver me timbers, arrr, but mine used a full six foot length o' elastic. Avast, me proud beauty! T' engine mount tube and aft centerin' ring come up t' t' first coupler. Arrr! T' fins were first tacked on with CA glue, then several layers o' wood glue fillets were used. Ya scallywag! Overall, matey, I'd rate it 3 points if built stock.

Flight/Recovery:

T' modified Iris performs beautifully on long burn 29mm motors. Specifically, t' F-22-5J, ya bilge rat, shiver me timbers, G-33-7J, G-25-5W (My personal favorite), matey, and the F-20-4 Econojet. You could also use t' E-16-4 and E-23-4 for small flying sites. Blimey! I have yet t' try it on 24mm motors, although t' F-12-3 might be a good choice for small fields in calm weather. Arrr! I have yet t' have a flawed recovery when usin' t' recommended motors (Meanin' NO F-22-7s) . Ya scallywag! Overall, ya bilge rat, this is one of me favorite flyin' rockets, so I'd give it 5 points in flight/recovery.

In value, shiver me timbers, this kit is a pretty good deal. Aye aye! It would be a much better deal if it came with a 29mm mount. It is a very durable rocket if you take care o' it; a good improvement would be reinforced edges on t' fins.

Overall, I give this kit 4 points.
