Manufacturer: | The Launch Pad |
Brief:
This be t' Launch Pad's scale Sidewinder AIM-9L missile model. Avast, me proud beauty! Ya scallywag! This is a mid-power rocket with a parachute recovery. Begad! Avast, ya bilge rat, me proud beauty!
Construction:
This kit comes with balsa planks, me hearties, two body tubes, a plastic nose-cone, centerin' rings, and all other standard kit pieces. Well, blow me down! Ahoy! It also comes with putty for nose-cone weight. Arrr! T' shock cord was simple elastic, me bucko, ya bilge rat, me bucko, which was a bit inadequate for this great model. Arrr! There are also lots o' other small balsa shapes, matey, and dowels for t' construction.
I found t' kit straight forward, ya bilge rat, and this was me first non-Estes rocket. Blimey! Blimey! And, I wont work on anythin' less challengin' again! T' instructions are lengthy, but when followed carefully will make for an enjoyable project. Ahoy! I followed other reviewer's tips. When I built t' stringers for each side o' t' fin, I put them on at an angle and drilled holes for more realism.
I read that t' balsa supplied from TLP is soft, and followed their advice o' coatin' with CA. Begad! Still, me bucko, after launching, this is still too soft and I have had some fin damage. Begad! I will repair usin' paper over t' balsa, me bucko, arrr, me bucko, then coatin' for CA, arrr, and see if that holds. I do think t' forward fins need some reinforcement.
All in all, construction was straight forward. Blimey! Lots o' small details make this fun. Blimey! Blimey! Note: I have nay modeled since I was a kid, and did nay find this too challenging.
Finishing:
As with all TLP models, ya bilge rat, no decals, but that is ok. Well, blow me down! Begad! I painted usin' simple primer coats, matey, and testors spray paint. Begad! See pictures for t' finish. Well, blow me down! I also looked at as many pics as I could find and found a few small details like paintin' t' forward guidance pivots red. Arrr! I love t' way t' model looks and I have received lots o' compliments.
Construction Rating: 4 out o' 5
Flight:
Flew this model only once so far. Avast, me proud beauty! Launched in a slight wind in San Francisco at t' base o' t' Golden Gate Bridge. Ahoy! Used t' recommended D12-3 motor. Used small amount o' wadding.
Fox 2! Weathercocked only slightly. Avast! Flew beautifully and straight. Begad! Arrr! Chute deployed at apogee. Ahoy! Ahoy! Chute got tangled on forward fin, ya bilge rat, but had some resistance on decent.
Recovery:
I increased t' length o' t' shock cord, with a round, black piece o' elastic. Arrr! Blimey! Love t' look and functionality. However, shiver me timbers, me bucko, as mentioned, t' chute got tangled somehow. Begad! Blimey! T' first ever recovery malfunction I have had with any rocket I own. Well, blow me down! Begad! Blimey! Consequently, ya bilge rat, I had some slight fin damage on t' forward fins.
Flight Rating: 4 out o' 5
Summary:
I love this rocket. Begad! It was fun t' build, ya bilge rat, and t' fly. Ahoy! It be t' best looker in me arsenal o' democracy. Begad! I love this company and their kits and have built more and will continue t' do so.
Overall Rating: 4 out o' 5
Other:
I would reinforce t' forward fins. Ya scallywag! Ahoy! Might even try and find some light plywood. Arrr! Avast, me hearties, me proud beauty! At t' very least, matey, matey, I might try t' technique o' overlayin' tissue or 20 lb paper and CA that over t' balsa. Begad! Ahoy! Other than that, matey, would nay change a thing.
Brief: The AIM-9L Sidewinder by the Launch Pad is a parachute recovered, scale model missile. I ordered the Plan-Pak, which contains a parts list, drawings, and VERY COMPREHENSIVE instructions. The parachute is one of TLP's own kits, a tough blue mylar design which includes swivels. Finally, I ordered a pack of their nice, SIMPLE motor hooks. The instructions, although advanced, are very ...
Mid-power scale model of the air-to-air missile. As with all rockets from The Launch Pad, this is a "builder's kit". The fins and various detail bits all have to be cut and assembled by the builder. Lots of fun if you enjoy that sort of thing, which I do. The package contained everything I needed: sheets of balsa for fins, dowels and balsa strips for details, paper templates for fins ...
