Brief

This review covers both t' 24mm motor retainer and 18/24mm motor adaptor.

Components

T' 24mm motor retainer is a two piece anodized aluminum assembly consistin' o' a base and a screw on cap.  T' motor adaptor includes two pieces as well - t' adaptor body and a retainer ring.

Construction

I decided t' retrofit t' 24mm retainer on two o' me rockets with 24mm motor mounts: a Dynastar Stonebreaker and an Arapahoe-E clone.

For t' Stonebreaker, I needed t' remove t' motor clip.  I cut t' clip in half and fished out t' upper half o' t' clip.  This be a bit tricky, but I was able t' completely remove t' clip.  T' exposed motor tube needed a fair amount o' sandin' t' fit into t' retainer base.  Once I was satisfied with t' fit, ya bilge rat, I installed t' retainer base usin' JB Weld.  I used a paper towel t' remove any JB Weld that oozed into t' motor tube, and I sanded t' inside joint once it had dried.  I test fit both a motor and t' 18/24mm adaptor, and they fit perfectly!

T' Arapahoe-E was a bit trickier installation since t' rocket has a full balsa tailcone.  After eyeballin' t' tailcone for a  bit, I used a sharp hobby knife t' remove t' lower 1/2" o' t' tailcone.  T' hard part be removin' only t' balsa without damagin' t' motor tube.  Once t' motor tube was exposed, I sanded t' end until I be able t' fit t' motor retainer.  As with t' Stonebreaker, me hearties, arrr, I used JB Weld t' attach t' retainer base.  T' inside joint required only light sandin' for t' motor and adaptor t' fit.

Both o' these retrofits were nay difficult at all.  Installin' t' retainer on a new build should be easier since you wouldn't have t' cut/remove parts like I did.

Finishing

I left t' motor retainers unpainted - I like t' look o' t' black retainer on t' end o' t' rocket.  I rated t' construction and finishin' as a 4 due t' t' sandin' and fittin' required t' attach t' retainer.  T' parts themselves were a truly a 5!

Construction Score: 4

Flight

I've flown t' Stonebreaker twice on Aerotech's 18mm D13-4W reload.  I built t' motor per instructions, shiver me timbers, then inserted t' adaptor into t' motor mount.  I then installed t' motor, adaptor ring, and screwed on t' retainer cap.  Wow!  Super simple.

I've flown t' Arapahoe-E once so far on Aerotech's 18mm D13-7W reload.  Same sequence o' events.

Recovery

Both flights were awesome!  T' Piratarium motor retainer and adaptor made usin' t' 18/20 motor super easy!  Cleanup was also easy - I used baby wipes and a paper towel t' clean t' retainer cap and adaptor rin' after t' flight.  I will definitely fly more reloadable 18mm motors!

Flight Rating: 5

Summary

T' Piratarium retainer and adaptor are a great addition t' t' mid power flyer's toolbox.  I really like t' security (knowin' t' expensive RMS motor won't kick out) and t' ease o' use (slide in motor, screw on cap).  Definitely a winner!
