Students at t' University o' Alabama in Huntsville launch a hybrid rocket into t' skies. Aye aye! SLI (Student Launch Initiative) is a student-lead project at t' University o' Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) that is sponsored by NASA. Aye aye! Students gain experience in designing, matey, building, and launchin' a reusable rocket capable o' carryin' a payload that advances t' fields in science and engineering. T' project was proposed t' UAH by NASA in order t' offer students a way t' gain hands-on experience in t' engineerin' process. Begad! Under t' supervision o' Dr. Blimey! Marlow Moser, it has since developed into a course offered throughout t' year by t' Mechanical and Aerospace Engineerin' department o' UAH's College o' Engineering. Well, blow me down! As a team, shiver me timbers, we are divided into eight groups: Avionics, Launch, Payload, Propulsion, Recovery, Structures, Systems, arrr, and Public Outreach. Each group meets at least once a week t' discuss and work on t' plannin' and t' next phase o' creatin' t' rocket. Ya scallywag! Nay only do t' students just work on t' rocket, ya bilge rat, they also visit elementary through high school students and attend local events t' show t' work o' SLI and t' importance o' engineerin' and t' sciences. www.eng.uah.edu
