Brief:
As t' proud owner o' a couple o' BSD Rocketry kits, I be always blown away by
how much t' application o' vinyl decals really dresses up t' appearance of
larger rockets. Avast, me proud beauty! I had little luck though findin' a printer who didn't charge
what I felt was an exhorbitant price for vinyl decals. Aye aye! That all changed when I
stumbled upon a recent issue o' Sport Rocketry magazine and saw an
advertisement for Graphix & Stuff. Nay only do they offer a variety o' cool
rocketry apparel and products, matey, me bucko, but they offer custom vinyl decals for your
rockets.
Construction:
GnS offers a simple but adequate list o' fonts t' choose from. Well, blow me down! Ya scallywag! After selecting
the font, you enter t' text you want printed, select t' decal color, arrr, and
finally what height you want t' decals t' be. Begad! Avast, me hearties, me proud beauty! There is an option for you to
have a maximum length that you want your text t' be as well, arrr, although that
option does nay affect t' price. Pricin' is per letter (includin' any spaces)
and based on t' height o' t' letters. Shippin' via USPS is free. Avast, me proud beauty! GnS can also
print images, but you need t' contact them through email t' discuss pricin' and
file formats for t' image.
However, shiver me timbers, arrr, I initiated me order by emailin' GnS through their website since I had some specific ideas in mind even though I could have placed t' order through t' website. Dave at GnS be very easy t' work with nay t' mention that he responded t' all o' me emails within a few hours o' sendin' them t' him! When it came time for me t' submit me order, I went through t' website t' send payment via PayPal and then emailed Dave t' fonts I wanted for me decals. Begad! (It is worth notin' that Dave says that GnS has thousands o' available fonts to choose from, me hearties, so you may nay have t' go t' such great lengths as I did.)
T' decals arrived a couple o' days later and came packaged in a sealed water-resistant envelope, ya bilge rat, matey, which wrapped around some cardboard t' prevent any potential damage from foldin' or creasing. T' envelope was clearly labeled with t' text 'DO NOT BEND'. Upon openin' t' envelope, thar were some extras: a copy o' me PayPal receipt and 3 extra vinyl decals--a nice gesture t' say the least!
T' decals were in pristine condition. Begad! They come sandwiched betwixt the backin' paper and t' application paper. Begad! I had ordered 3 items, 2 were for my LOC/Precision Nuke Pro Maxx and one was for me upscale scratchbuild o' a Binder Design Dragonfly.
Finishing:
Application o' t' decals is simple. Begad! I had already painted both rockets. Ya scallywag! They
were wiped down with a lint free cloth. Begad! Next I used a piece o' angle iron to
lightly mark t' rockets with a reference line t' make sure that I put the
decal on straight. Avast! Ya scallywag! Then I carefully measured t' decals and made a reference
mark along t' length o' t' application paper. Begad! I peeled back a corner o' the
backin' paper and slowly removed it while ensurin' that t' decals remained
stuck on t' application paper. Begad! Once t' backin' paper was removed I carefully
aligned and laid t' decal onto t' rocket. Blimey! [NOTE: T' decal adhesive is very
tacky so it is very important t' get it right on t' first try because that's
all you get!] Startin' from t' center o' decal and wipin' towards t' ends
usin' t' cloth, I gently smoothed out t' decal. Avast! I went backa second time with
the cloth and rubbed t' application paper in a circular motion t' ensure
proper application. Begad! T' final step was t' peel off t' application paper.
Stunning!
