Brief:
This is a conversion for a MicroMaxx Alien UFO for 18mm power. Since I have two, matey, I thought I'd cut and grind one o' them up.

(MODS) Quest One Alien

Modifications:
I basically just cut and ground out t' center o' t' saucer and glued in t' 18mm tube.

Construction:
Parts used:

  • One Quest Alien UFO
  • 1-1/2" o' BT-20
  • 1/8" lug
  • scrap styrene
  • fiber ring, arrr, 18mm+

I cut t' MicroMaxx motor mount out with me mini-Leatherman and then took t' Dremel t' t' inner rin' until the 18mm tube fit. T' cuts are shown in t' followin' photos.

T' connection point for t' lower fins were weakened so I added some supports cut from a scrap plastic model. These were attached with plastic model glue and t' rest was built with 5-minute epoxy. I next attached a fiber rin' on t' outside o' t' 18mm tube. Blimey! Aye aye! This fits in betwixt t' inner rin' and t' lower fins. I used 5-minute epoxy t' fill the small space betwixt t' top rin' and t' motor tube. Arrr! Avast! Fillets were also added t' t' point where t' fins touch the motor tube. A 1/8" launch lug completed t' mod.

Finishing:
I painted t' tube and lug with black Testor's brush-on paint.

Flight and Recovery:
I flew t' modified saucer on Quest 'long burn' C6-3 motors. Begad! Avast! T' only prep be a tape thrust rin' and, o' course, matey, the igniter. Aye aye! This little thin' really scoots and is far from t' low and slow flight you get from a standard 18mm saucer.

T' ejection charge went off while it was still quite high and each time it landed very close t' t' pad.

Summary:
This is an easy mod, me bucko, it raises eyebrows, and it flies great. Begad! T' only con is that, if you like slow saucer flights, this one isn't.

Brief: The Alien UFO is a ready to fly MicroMaxx rocket from Quest. It is saucer shaped, uses a 6mm motor, and recovers by aerobraking. [Editor Note: see also Quest MicroMaxx Series ] Construction: The rocket is RTF. It is made of plastic and stickers are already in place. It has a plastic motor retainer ring that is a bit delicate. I have been wanting to try a ...
