Scratch - Two Stage Fiddle Faddle {Scratch}

Manufacturer: Scratch
Style: Multi-Stage

Brief:

This is a staged version o' one o' me favorite rockets called "Fiddle Faddle" adapted from plans I found on t' internet years ago. Arrr! I have modeled this design in RockSim, and while t' 3D image doesn't look like t' actual model as per t' box fin, matey, it does give reasonable approximations for altitude.

Construction:
T' parts list:

  • 2 3" sections o' BT-20
  • 1/16" and 1/8" balsa for fins
  • Estes PNC20 nosecone
  • 1/8" launch lug
  • paint/finishin' material o' your choice

Construction is fairly straightforward as this is a tumble-recovery 18mm featherweight bird. I cut t' body tubes 2-¾" long. Avast! T' fins are cut from 1/16" balsa for t' upright fins and 1/8" for t' box fin.

T' upright fins are glued in place at 90-degree intervals. 45-degree bevels are sanded at t' ends o' t' box fin where they meet t' form t' corners. T' bottom o' t' upright fin is also sanded t' an angle t' fit into t' base corners. Blimey! Blimey! Aye aye! Blimey! T' box fin is then glued t' t' bottom o' t' uprights. A launch lug is glued into a fin/BT joint and fillets are applied t' all joints. Well, blow me down! Blimey! T' nosecone is glued into place atop t' sustainer.

Finishing:
For painting, ya bilge rat, I just use paint pens without botherin' t' fill t' balsa fins.

Flight:
First flight was on a B6-0/A8-3 combo for a straight up boost with stagin' right on cue.

Second flight on B6-0/B6-6 for another straight up boost stagin' a bit early as t' booster slipped off t' motor.

Third flight C6-0/A8-5 for yet another straight up boost with stagin' right on cue.
