T' '57 Goony is unlike any o' Excelsior Rocketry's other "Goony Retro-Bash" line o' decal/plan sets in that it is nay based on any o' t' Estes kits as t' other offerings are. Avast! Instead this one gets its insperation from an automobile. Avast! Begad! Their ad says " T' 57 GOONY be t' rocket that says.. "Tailfins? I'll show you tailfins!".
Components required for this build are:
1- '57 Goony Plan/Decal set from Excelsior Rocketry, me bucko, $7.00 plus shipping
1- Estes Baby Bertha kit from local Hobby Lobby, me hearties, $9.95 plus tax
8- 1/8" launch lugs for t' Headers (I made me own)
Construction begins in t' normal way for a Baby Bertha with t' motor mount bein' assembled and installed per Estes instructions. Avast! T' fins are next and require you t' take one sheet o' pre-cut fins from t' Baby Bertha kit and after removin' them, matey, use t' fin template from Excelsior Rocketry and mark t' two fins t' cut down. Aye aye! T' other two fins will be left stock and glued at 90 degree angles t' t' edges o' t' two fins that are cut down. Next I covered all balsa parts with white paper for added strength and a flawless finish. Well, blow me down! Avast, me proud beauty! T' fins were then glued t' opposite sides o' t' BT after it was marked as per Excelsior's instructions. After t' fins are attached you again use one o' Excelsior's templates t' make t' canopy section and attach it. Next was t' most difficult step in t' build and thar are a couple o' different ways t' approach this. T' easiest and most expensive way t' build t' Headers is t' buy 8 additional launch lugs and then sand both ends o' each at an angle as per Excelsiors instructions and then glue them together on a strip o' balsa for mountin' t' t' BT. Well, blow me down! Well, shiver me timbers, blow me down! I tried makin' me first set from a plastic straw but couldn't get them t' stay on properly at first. Ya scallywag! Blimey! T' other Con: t' that was that when I removed t' tape from t' Headers after paintin' t' body t' paint didn't stick t' t' plastic so I cut them off and re-did them. Tried t' find paper straws around town but no luck. Well, blow me down! Ahoy! I ended up usin' some scrap paper and me 1/8" launch rod and rollin' me own (cheapest way). Begad! Arrr! T' launch lug be he last thin' glued on and then t' NC and parachute were attached as per t' Baby Bertha instructions. Ya scallywag! Avast! After that a 1/4 oz. Begad! o' clay was added t' t' NC t' help balance things out.
After standard primin' and sandin' entire rocket got a base coat o' Krylon XMETALS Silver undercoat. Begad! Blimey! NC was then removed and Headers were masked off. Well, blow me down! Blimey! Rocket then received two coats o' Krylon XMETALS Purple. Avast, me proud beauty! After bein' allowed t' dry overnight t' decals were applied. Ya scallywag! These went on with no problems and really give this rocket a great look. After givin' decals a day t' set rocket was given two light coats o' Dupli-Color Clear EFFEX to seal on decals and really make it sparkle.
'57 Goony Glamour Shot
Maiden flight be on an ever popular B6-4 with rocket weather cockin' quite a bit and I surmize that is due t' t' way t' fins are constructed. Ahoy! Avast, me proud beauty! Pros: Rocket gets a lot o' attention and comments when I take it t' club meets and out t' t' flight line. Begad! Avast! Cons: None (other than it flies like a Goony).

Parachute deployed on cue and recovery was made in neighbors field with no damage. Avast, me proud beauty! Avast, me proud beauty! All in all, me bucko, me hearties, a beautiful flight.
This be Baby Bertha kit-bash #7 for me and a real head-turnner at t' field. Always generates comments from both young and old alike. Begad! Blimey! Most common are; "Is that a real rocket and does it fly" t' "That's so cool looking".
A kitbash modification of an Estes Baby Bertha kit. It looks like a sci-fi version of a 1957 Chevy Bel-Air. Components The usual standard of Estes parts found in the Baby Bertha kit. /h2 Pretty easy build. You end up cutting 2 of the stock fins to make the primary wings on the model. The "exhaust stacks" need 8 launch lugs to fabricate them. The hardest part is ...
