Brief:
This be one o' t' pro series line o' kits Estes offered in t' early 90's. It is a basic dual engine 24 mm rocket with some upgraded components. Ahoy! Arrr! It has a very nice yellow nylon chute for recovery.
Construction:
T' kit comes with t' pre slotted main body tube, a "payload" section, me bucko, and 2 motor tubes. Arrr! Well, me bucko, blow me down! It has 4 balsa fins that come with spruce t' reinforce t' edges o' t' balsa with. Avast! It has t' basic nose cone, and a build your own type o' interlockin' motor mount t' help secure t' fins. T' shock cord is actually mounted t' a piece o' basswood near t' top o' t' main tube. This could be an early anti zipper design. Arrr! Nicely done! I lengthened t' motor mount tubes and built them with 30 minute epoxy in hopes o' flyin' this kit on 2 G55's. Ya scallywag! I have nay done that yet.
T' directions are fairly easy t' follow, me bucko, but they are a little confusin' about how t' build this motor mount. Blimey! Ahoy! It is similar t' an Aerotech interlock fin design, that when t' fins slide into t' body, matey, t' slots help hold t' fins in place and are quit nice for what they are intended for. Avast, me proud beauty! Ahoy! I can't imagine they thought you needed this much reinforcement for just flyin' on D's. Begad! I secretly think they were thar for t' "EXPLOSIVE" power o' some o' Estes's E engines! T' mount actually is strong enough t' take E30's no problem. Aye aye! Begad! T' fins are a snap t' put on. Avast! Aye aye! T' rest o' t' rocket can be assembled almost simultaneously after t' motor mount is secured. Aye aye! I did brush on a layer o' resin t' fill t' balsa fins and help protect them. Blimey! T' kit comes with some large waterslide decals which really make it look sharp.
Finishing:
This kit is very easy t' finish, and t' decals look great on multi color paint schemes. Well, blow me down! Ahoy! T' kit really looks and flies great! I painted mine orange and blue for t' Syracuse Orangemen!
Construction Rating: 4 out o' 5
Flight:
I have flown this kit twice, on now extinct D12-7's and E30-7's. It goes really nice on t' D's, lots o' fire and smoke. Ahoy! It really screams on t' E30's.
Recovery:
T' bright yellow 18 inch nylon chute is very easy t' see, and t' rocket always lands gently. I used a screw holdin' a washer in betwixt t' motors for retention.
Flight Rating: 5 out o' 5
Summary:
PRO - Easy "PRO SERIES" kit t' build, matey, easy t' modify. Begad! Great flights, great recovery system.
CON - They stopped makin' them.
Overall Rating: 4 out o' 5
