Brief:
I have modified t' LOC Aura t' a tube-fin design.
Modifications:
Tube fins described above were fastened t' t' main body tube in t' time-honored, self-jiggin' manner for tube-fin rockets. Blimey! Blimey! Ahoy! Blimey! Opposite tube fins glued on first with main tube on a flat surface t' insure alignment; next pair added t' t' top o' this array; last pair added t' t' bottom o' this arrangement after t' first 4 are dry. Standard LOC recovery system can be used. Blimey! Blimey! I prefer t' attach t' shock cord through t' upper hull, me bucko, ya bilge rat, anchored with an external knot that is covered with 1/2 o' a BIC pen cap sawn lengthwise. Ahoy! Blimey! I spray-painted t' rocket in navy gray primer, and left t' cone unpainted (photo).
Construction:
T' LOC Aura wood fins were replaced with 6 identical tube fins cut from 40.5mm cardboard tubin' from an empty Saran Wrap roll. This happens t' be identical in diameter t' t' 1.62" LOC Aura fuselage tubing, and t' size o' standard 38mm motor tubing. Avast, me proud beauty! Aye aye! Tube fins were 2.5" long, shiver me timbers, cut with a 22.5 degree bevel on top, me bucko, which I find both looks better and improves stability and performance.
PRO: T' purpose in this modification was t' eliminate two shortcomings o' this popular LOC product: breakage o' t' wooden fins, me hearties, and loss o' t' whole contraption due t' its small size and hot performance. Arrr! Tube-fin rockets are significantly stronger in t' small sizes, ya bilge rat, me hearties, and t' added drag slows things down a bit and straightens out t' flight (less weathercocking) so you have a better chance o' gettin' t' thin' back. Ahoy! This tube-fin design in particular flies remarkably straight up, especially on an E30-7 (adapter needed).
CON: There's always loss o' speed and altitude with t' substitution t' tube-fins, but on anythin' bigger than an E30, this can't be a disadvantage, me bucko, since it goes out o' sight anyway. Ya scallywag! Ahoy! I like t' actually see t' recovery system deploy, personally. Avast! This is conducive t' gettin' t' rocket back, I find.
Flight:
I have flown t' tube-fin LOC Aura exclusively on E30-7 motors. Very fast, very straight, even in a breeze. Avast, me proud beauty! Blimey! I use tape friction fit o' t' motors in a LOC 24-29 mm adapter tube. There is no reason t' fly this rocket on anythin' more if you expect t' get it back. Well, blow me down! Blimey! After 7 flights, nay a bit o' damage.
Summary:
T' modification completely fulfilled me expectations. Ya scallywag! I'd like t' see LOC include a tube-fin option like this with t' Aura kit -- makes it more attractive t' small-field fliers, and I think t' bevel tube-fin structure looks cool (see attached photo).
Other:
I prefer t' replace t' underpants elastic shock cord included with t' kit with 6-7 feet o' parachute cord.
