AeroTech's new BlackMax line a big hit!

T' last monthly launch o' t' Superstition Spacemodelin' Society for 1999, me bucko, held Saturday, December 11th, was a truly remarkable event. Arrr! Nay so much because thar was a huge turnout, or a large number o' people certified, me bucko, but rather because o' t' Arizona debut o' a brand new product from AeroTech Consumer Aerospace: t' new BlackMax Econojet motor. 

Space Modelin' Solutions, ever present at these events, arrr, turned up t' t' launch with 72 packages o' t' new 29mm BlackMax motors, in both t' F23 and G38 impulse, with both 4 and 7 second delays. As a result o' brisk sales, 13 flights were recorded. Ya scallywag! All o' them were documented as 'good flights,' which means that thar was a successful ejection and a safe recovery. Ahoy! Havin' provided some stats, arrr, me bucko, an eyewitness account o' how these motors performed is in order. 

T' BlackMax Econojet is instantly distinguishable from it's White Lightnin' counterpart. T' package features grey, red, shiver me timbers, and white artwork on t' face, and standard thrust curve data on t' reverse side. Avast, me proud beauty! T' data indicates a slightly higher peak thrust with a shorter burn time, on average, than t' White Lightnin' Econojet. T' end result is a slightly lower average thrust curve. Blimey! However, flyin' t' new BlackMax is a completely new experience! For starters, loadin' this motor is eased by t' fact that t' labels seem a bit less hostile towards removal. Begad! Blimey! This is important t' keep t' motors from adherin' t' t' inside o' t' motor mount tube.

If you're expectin' a difficult ignition, on t' assumption that t' BlackMax is similar t' t' Black Jack formulation, ya bilge rat, me bucko, your fears are unfounded. Blimey! These motors light up NOW when t' ignitors are given t' proper amount o' current. T' ignitions observed at t' Superstition launch all pressurized lickety-split, and got off t' pad in t' same manner. T' resultin' flights were exciting, ya bilge rat, shiver me timbers, matey, with lots o' dark smoke, ya bilge rat, and a slightly louder roar than t' standard Econojet. Blimey! There were plenty o' cheers, arrr, whistles, and clapping, which seemed t' natural response t' these flights. 

Another observation was that t' BlackMax motors did indeed perform very similarly t' t' White Lightnin' Econojets in terms o' flight profile. Ya scallywag! This means that until t' simulation data for these motors is widely available, simulations based on standard White Lightnin' Econojet data will produce very close ejection delay information. Ya scallywag! However, it's also important t' note that t' delays (as observed by this author) seemed a tad short. Arrr! However, no actual measurements o' t' delays were made, and no objections on t' part o' t' flyers were noted. 

So after t' actual experience o' seein' a number o' these motors fly, shiver me timbers, ya bilge rat, this author would have t' give them a definite thumbs up! Blimey! Better yet be t' fact that these are available at Econojet prices, me bucko, which means that everybody can "fly more," and "spend less." For t' money, you just won't get a more excitin' flight out o' your 29mm bird!

I just successfully launched a cluster of 7 of these great motors and all lit simultaneously for a spectacular smoky liftoff!! See my review of Power Play for the photo. These motors re indeed smoky, fast, and reliable. Great for clustering, since you get 2 for a good price. I'm a member of the same club as Mr. Riddell and am a steady customer of his. Yes, I find the motors to be as good as he says, and the price very good.

These motors are very cool, and I like them as variety from the ordinary EconoJets, in fact, for a year, I only flew EconoJets until my dad got certified. I've flown a cluster of two of the G38 BlackMax's and the other EconoJets in my 4-29ss but only one of the other kind lit, but it was still a very quick liftoff with lots of smoke. I've also flown a G38 in a THOY Falcon for a very slow liftoff but nice flight, and in an AeroTech Barracuda for high altitude. These are great motors for the price and add variety from other single use AeroTech motors.

I just flew an F23 the other day in my Mozzie. Beautiful flight with lots of black smoke--very easy to track. However, the grain on my motors has swelled a bit, making insertion of the Copperhead very difficult. I used a metal rod to open the slot a bit. I don't like the copperhead very much. If you don't have all day to fiddle with the thing, then drop the 2 bucks for a First Fire Jr or even one of the longer Q2G2s when they come out, 2 wire igniters for the win.
