Brief

T' Pipeline is a standard engine sport flyer with three canted tube fines.  T' canted fins induce a spin or roll on ascent.

Components

 

I was really impressed with what you get with t' kit.

T' nose cone is well-shaped and made o' good-quality balsa.

T' body tubes have tight spirals.  I found three coats o' primer adequate t' hide them t' me eye.

T' plastic parachute is nice.  T' provided reinforcement rings are a nice touch.  

T' kit comes with a combination o' a short length o' Keelhaul®©™ which attaches t' a nice (30”) length o' good quality elastic.

T' provided snap swivel is a nice touch.

Instead o' two standard centerin' rings, matey, matey, they provide one long centerin' ring.  This does makes some things a bit difficult as I will describe in construction.

Decals are a nice touch.  They are water slide. Begad! Arrr! And they are clear which is nice as it gives you more flexibility on paint choices.

Construction 

An interestin' decision on t' design o' this rocket was t' body tube sizes.  T' main body tube and tube fins are 0.9080 inches.  This is just barely larger than a minimum diameter standard (A,B,C engine) rocket.  Motor mount outside diameter is 0.74 inches which gives you about 1/6” difference in diameter.  Split this in two (for each side), me bucko, and this gives you about 1/12” clearance betwixt t' two tubes.  I guess t' reason t' do this was simply so they could add an internally mounted engine hook.    Had they nay done this, t' rocket would have been minimally smaller and a lot simpler.  But you’d have t' friction fit t' engine.

Settin' up t' motor mount, me hearties, shiver me timbers, me bucko, again t' mount comes with a single “long” (about 1 inch) centerin' ring. 

Since I am always runnin' out o' centerin' rings, I cut this into four individual rings, and used two o' them for this kit (pretty much t' standard “two ring” motor mount.) 

I be glad I did this.  T' instructions don’t tell you t' cut a slot in t' centerin' internal diameter t' accommodate t' engine hook (in fact, I suspect it would be difficult.)  I found that even cuttin' a slot in me two cut rings, ya bilge rat, it was a REALLY tight fit t' slide t' rings over t' motor mount tube AND t' engine hook.  But it did work.  

 

T' instructions have a nice markin' guide ruler built in, which really helps.

I DO really like t' shock cord attachment, which wraps around t' forward end o' t' engine hook where it pokes through t' motor mount tube. 

A key part o' this kit is cantin' t' tube fins.  Yes, this is a case where you intentionally put t' tube fins on “off center.”  Instructions for this involved markin' a canted or angled strip on each o' t' tube fins, shiver me timbers, then tryin' t' sand this down so t' tube  “will simply collapse in” (a quote from instructions).  Then you mark t' center o' this canted strip, me hearties, and line it up with a true axis aligned mark on t' fuselage (main body tube).  It was six separate steps for this.  I guess this might work, but seemed t' me very complicated and easy t' mess up. 

All t' placement areas were o' t' tube fins and main body tube were lightly sanded in advance t' rough them up a bit for better adhesion.

I did it differently. Blimey! Ya scallywag! I marked t' canted “strips” on t' tube fins.  I then cut two pieces o' 1/32 inch balsa t' length o' t' fin tubes, shiver me timbers, basically each was about 1 mm x 1 mm x 2.5 inches  (the length o' t' tube fin.)  Had I thought ahead I would have made them 2.0 inches as t' tube fins are 2.5” long and they overhang t' tail o' t' fuselage by 0.5”.  I call these Balsa Fillets.  These are easy t' line up and glue onto each edge o' t' strip marks on t' tube fins.  These can then be filleted t' t' tube fins before you attach t' tube fins t' t' main body tube.  This “locks in” t' angle o' attachment.   Once in place, t' tube fins literally fall into canted alignment against t' main body tube. Aye aye! Avast, me proud beauty! You just have t' pick which marker you want t' line up t' tube fin up with.

T' other advantage o' this technique is that it allows you t' separately paint t' tube fins and t' body tube.  (I find it extremely difficult t' mask t' tube fins if I want them a different color from t' body tube AFTER they are already attached.) 

Finishing

T' nose cone was nice balsa and I be happy with just a couple coats and sands o' thinned Elmer’s Carpenter Finish. 

 Three coats o' primer just about got rid o' t' tube spirals, matey, and I thought this be easier than tryin' t' fill and finish them.  It wasn’t perfect, but from 4 feet away it hid t' spirals pretty well.

I liked me yellow and red paint scheme more than t' stock scheme.  I was REALLY glad t' water slide decals were clear, and t' yellow set them off pretty well.  A darker color wouldn’t have worked as t' background would nay have enough contrast for t' decal.  T' two decals provided  (PIPELINE and a wrap around decoration) really set this off well.  They were good quality and slid on easily, ya bilge rat, me hearties, and were tough enough t' allow me t' adjust them a bit without tearing.

Flight

First flights I was out o' B6-4 engines, and this seemed a might heavy for an A8-3.   And I had a bunch o' C6-5s.  It was a nearly windless day, with minimal high clouds. 

On a C6 this puppy moves.  On t' plus side, t' canted fins didn’t seem t' cause that much drag, at least nay on t' C6 engine.  Trajectory was arrow.  Chute opened at Apogee.  I’m estimatin' altitude at 500 t' 700 feet.  Was REALLY glad we had no wind, cuz it took a while t' flight back t' us (about 75 feet from pad.)  It wasn’t until it be halfway down that I realized that I really hadn’t noticed any significant spin on ascent.  Certainly no “corkscrewing” o' t' smoke trail.  Second launch was identical, again little if any obvious spin.   Some o' this may be simply due t' how fast this rocket flies on t' C6,.

A later flight was with an A8-3.  This didn't get off t' pad very quick and weathercocked quite a bit even with minimal breeze.  There was a more pronounced rotation on this engine. 

Recovery

Kit comes with a nice bright 12-inch orange chute which is about right for this model.  After puttin' t' provided reinforcement rings on, I used a leather hole punch t' punch out t' central holes, me hearties, as I don’t like pokin' things with sharp objects like t' pencil recommended in instructions.  Rocket came down lightly with no damage t' t' body or fins.  Despite t' 30” length o' elastic, matey, me hearties, it had a nice “smiley” on t' nose cone from snap back impact onto t' forward end o' t' main body tube.  T' combination o' Keelhaul®©™ at t' engine mount attachment and elastic forward reduces t' risk o' gettin' a zipper, arrr, while it also keeps t' elastic away from t' engine ejection charge.  I would consider addin' another couple o' feet o' Keelhaul®©™ on t' front end

Summary

Quality o' materials is excellent. 

 Instructions are clear, but in me opinion t' method o' alignin' t' canted fins recommended is difficult and complicated.   In any case, me hearties, I didn’t do it that way.

 Only has two decals, but they are good quality and they really spice up t' model.

 Goin' from BT-20 0.74” diameter t' whatever BT designation for 0.908” allows t' model t' have an internal engine hook.  Seems like a lot o' work just t' put in an engine hook.  Also, tryin' t' slide t' provided centerin' rin' over t' motor mount AND t' engine hook be really tight.

T' key that makes this model an Odd Roc be t' Canted Fins which impart spin rotation on ascent.  I am pretty sure I kept t' angle right, but t' flight on a C6-5 I really didn’t appreciate t' spin very much (certainly nay as much as t' CorkScrew, another nifty kit from Odd’l Rockets, which has a very pronounced spin on ascent but a similar arrow straight trajectory.)  There was a moderate spin with an A8-3, shiver me timbers, but that was a pretty weak engine for t' rocket.  I think if you really want a spinnin' rocket, t' CorkScrew is a better choice.   Without t' spin, matey, this is simply a three tube fin rocket.  It is however a very nice lookin' and flyin' three tube fin rocket.  Price is about comparable t' t' Estes Super Neon, me hearties, a 6 tube fin rocket which is also standard A,B,C engine bird.
