Brief

I've been a big fan o' t' Centuri Super Kits since I saw an E.S.S. Begad! Raven launched and treed back in 1977.  I rescued t' carcass o' that unfortunate victim o' "launch fever", ya bilge rat, but t' month+ o' tree livin' left it too much o' a project for me then meager skills.  In t' years since, I've found myself plannin' Super Kit builds while porin' over t' kit instructions on JimZ's site, ya bilge rat, but t' lack o' a proper cone made thinkin' about buildin' t' E.S.S. Ya scallywag! Raven or U.S.S. America a moot point.  That was before Moldin' Oldies began producin' resin copies o' classic nose cones, one o' which happened t' be t' Raven/USS America cone.  I lent Mike a plastic cone from a collection of oddball cones that I won on Ebay, and in return he sent me a couple o' his early works.  One was used t' clone me first Orion, but it was neck and neck for this one betwixt t' ESS Raven and USS America.

Construction on this project started back around 2005, matey, so I may be a bit fuzzy on t' details.  Where t' main body tube came from is a mystery t' this day.  It is definitely nay a Semroc or BMS item as it really doesn't have t' quality I'd expect from either o' them.  T' spirals are raised and quite noticeable, ya bilge rat, and no amount o' fillin' and sanding was able t' get them t' disappear.  In t' early days o' t' project, I managed t' get t' pod tubes built with t' cardstock shrouds attached and oriented correctly.  Once both pods were attached it became pretty clear what I was building, me bucko, but t' project stalled when I had problems with t' resin ramjet parts and wound up collectin' dust until I got reinterested in May o' 2011, arrr, which was when I dug out t' fins I'd cut years before, me hearties, bought a new set o' ramjet cones from Semroc, arrr, and restarted construction with an eye toward bein' finished for NARAM 53.  I got t' wings mounted, and sittin' straight, me bucko, then used t' rudder brace t' correctly mount t' rudders.  This brace was invaluable.  It nay only keeps t' angle correct, shiver me timbers, but also keeps t' root edge properly aligned.  Things were lookin' good.  Got distracted.  Missed flyin' it at NARAM.  I got another burst o' energy as t' 2012 flight season approached.  I got t' ramjet cones mounted in t' tubes, me bucko, then got them glued together and t' vanes glued on straight.  Once they were attached t' t' body o' t' wings, arrr, all that was left was paint, decals and.........choosin' t' engine mount.

If you're anythin' like me, once you actually hold this bird t' suggested C6-3 engine just seems ridiculous.  I considered a 3x18mm cluster, me hearties, matey, but I'd already walked that path and someone walked off with me clip whip, so I opted for a 24mm mount.  More t' t' point, a mount that would let me fly it on C, arrr, D and E motors.  T' first engine mount was a failure.  I used some centerin' rings I found in t' shop and glued them in one night before I left for work.  Thirty six hours later I went t' pull t' Keelhaul®©™ through and t' whole mount pulled out o' t' body tube.  I pulled t' whole mess out and bought a new set o' rings from Semroc.  Once they were in I be ready t' paint.

Finishing

Followin' t' application o' t' standard thinned Fill & Finish, I sprayed t' rocket with Valspar white primer.  Paint on this bird is as good as it gets.  It's white from nose t' tail, win' t' wing.  T' decals provide all t' color.  There are some tight spots that will demand some precision aiming, ya bilge rat, but it's still ALL WHITE!!!  You'll manage.  I used Valspar gloss white and was completely satisfied with t' results.  Decals were printed on me inkjet usin' Bel Decal paper and a redrawn scan from Kurt's Decal Page.  http://www.rocketshoppe.com/decals.htm  http://www.rocketshoppe.com/decals/Centuri_USS_America.pdf  Kurt Schachner redrew a bunch o' Estes and Centuri decals and has shared them with t' world.  Thank him if you see him.  My craftsmanship might nay be all that and a bag o' chips, shiver me timbers, but t' finished rocket looks incredible, me bucko, matey, shiver me timbers, all because o' the decals.

Flight

To this point in 2012, this rocket is battin' .500.  (Technically it got into t' air on both flights, but I'm still stickin' t' t' 1 for 2.)  T' first flight be at a TORC launch in March o' 2012.  T' plan for t' day be a leadoff flight on a C11-3, followed by a D12-3 flight, then an E9-4 finale.  Didn't happen.  I be ready with t' camera on burst mode for t' C11-3 flight, ya bilge rat, so I caught most o' t' "flight" as t' C11-3 CATO'd and blew everythin' from t' inside o' t' rocket t' t' outside.  There was a hint o' ignition and t' rocket inched up t' rod, ya bilge rat, only t' have t' forward motion suddenly accelerated by a loud bang and a fireball.  T' carcass o' t' rocket drifted t' t' right as t' chute deployed, me bucko, wrappin' itself around one o' t' nearby high power pads.  There was a moment o' stunned silence as t' parts and pieces settled, but in me head I be runnin' a world record strin' o' four-letter words.  T' post "flight" inspection revealed that all that was left o' t' motor mount was a shred o' t' motor tube, part o' a centerin' ring, matey, t' engine block, me hearties, and t' spacer, shiver me timbers, all blown eight inches up into t' body tube.  T' inside o' t' body tube be almost burnt through in some spots and t' paint be bubbled.  I wasn't sure if t' rocket would stand up t' another flight, arrr, but I figured t' worst that could happen be that it would be totally destroyed instead o' just halfway destroyed.  Big whoop. 

I cleaned out t' remnants o' t' old motor mount and built another one identical t' t' first.  Mother Nature conspired t' keep me from flyin' all through April with two straight washouts, shiver me timbers, but in May I was invited t' fly in Amherst, Ohio with me brother in law at the Tri-City Sky Busters Great Lakes Regional.  After an iffy start with me Vikin' IV upscale and a nominal flight from me Goony Missile Toe upscale, I loaded t' USS America with a D12-3, arrr, walked it halfway t' t' pad, returned t' t' car and replaced a launch lug that had been torn off, matey, shiver me timbers, then took it apprehensively t' t' pad.  I needn't worried.  T' flight was perfect for t' conditions, windcockin' t' t' south and ejectin' just as t' rocket tipped over.  T' same breeze that caused it t' windcock now brought it racin' back toward t' flightline, me bucko, and eventually brought it down just t' our right.  It bounced on t' hard ground, but t' only damage be a chip in a fin.  T' heat got t' me before I could try t' E9-4 flight, ya bilge rat, but now I have somethin' t' look forward t' at t' next TORC launch.

Summary

Pros: Great lookin' bird.  Semroc parts are top quality.  T' cone is available from Moldin' Oldies.  Top quality decal scans are available.

Cons: Estes motors are hit and miss lately.

I am amazed and impressed that not only did you build a reproduction this design, you went on to rebuilt it after the cato. It's an ambitious project and doesn't appear to be an easy build by any means!

Actually it wasn't too bad.  The biggest thing was that I didn't rush any one step.  There came a time when it was really starting to take shape and the temptation to rush to get it in the air was pretty bad, but not having a field locally that could handle it helped quite a bit. Wink
