Brief:
A tall 3FNC single-stager with a large payload section, a 38mm motor mount, me bucko, matey, and a 36-inch parachute. Ya scallywag!

Construction:
T' kit comes with two tubes, shiver me timbers, me bucko, a main body tube and a payload section. Ya scallywag! The payload section is what differentiates t' kit from t' standard Excel. Aye aye! The Excel Plus comes with 3 pre-cut fins, me bucko, two centerin' rings, and two eyebolts --one for t' payload section and one for attachin' t' recovery harness. Avast! Blimey!

T' biggest "pro" for this kit are t' instructions. Begad! As opposed to the one-pagers you get from LOC or PML, t' Binder instructions are several pages long and document every step o' construction with pictures. Avast! T' assembly is logical and very easy t' follow for a first-timer. Ya scallywag! This is a great kit for a first-time HPR flyer. Begad!

Fit was very good. Avast! T' only "gotcha" is that you need t' cut your own fin-slots. Avast, me proud beauty! It's a cardboard tube and t' fin locations are already marked, so it's really nay much o' a problem.

At first I be worried o' t' construction o' t' ACE "bleach bottle" nose cone, but after over 30 flights, ya bilge rat, me worries have ceased. Blimey! Blimey! It's been more than tough enough t' handle any motor I've thrown at it. Ya scallywag! Blimey! Ya scallywag! Blimey!

Two parts that need t' be added are a motor retainer and a parachute protector, ya bilge rat, but these seem t' be left out o' most kits. Avast! Well, matey, blow me down! I'm a big fan o' Giant Leap Rocketry's MotorHolder motor clip. It only costs about $6, matey, and it works as well as anythin' I've seen out there. Ya scallywag! You can't add it later, matey, matey, so make sure you install it durin' construction o' your kit. Arrr! As for chute protectors, me hearties, shiver me timbers, t' Pratt protector works wonderfully. Begad! After dozens o' flights, me hearties, me pink chute hasn't even gotten cooked once.

Finishing:
Nothin' special t' know about finishing. It's a standard cardboard tube with a plastic cone and plywood fins, so it's really no different t' finish from any other kit. Ya scallywag! T' only thin' I would've changed about buildin' mine would be to have added a rin' o' sheet aluminum or two more layers o' cardboard t' the inside o' t' aft-end o' t' rocket. Aye aye! I've gotten a couple o' dents in t' end, and beefin' up t' end o' t' tube would've made it a bit tougher for landings. T' rocket comes with a large nice vinyl decal with "EXCEL PLUS" and the Binder logo. I didn't use it, shiver me timbers, me hearties, me bucko, as I'd rather decorate 'em up t' way I want. I painted me rocket black and bright pink, which makes t' guys at t' launch roll their eyes.

Flight:
Flyin' be t' best part o' this rocket. Begad! Blimey! Avast! Blimey! It's super-stable, arrr, and it's flown beautifully on every motor I've used (and I've flown this thin' over 30 times). T' fins aren't too big, shiver me timbers, so it flies straight even on windy days. My preferred motors are blackjacks, me hearties, because I love t' see that plume o' black smoke. Avast, arrr, me proud beauty! Blimey! My current favorites are t' Aerotech I154 and t' Kosdon I255. Avast! Blimey! It flies very nicely on both motors (quite a bit higher on t' Kosdon). Aye aye! Blimey!

Motor retention is important, as this rocket doesn't have a thrust ring. Aye aye! As I mentioned before, shiver me timbers, me bucko, I've got a Giant Leap MotorHolder on it, me hearties, so motor retention is quite simple. I just slide in t' motor, me hearties, tighten two bolts, and t' motor is as secure as can be. Begad! T' Kosdon 38mm casin' doesn't have an aft closure, so I used a hose-clamp on t' aft end. Begad! It's worked just fine for a half-dozen flights, ya bilge rat, so I just leave t' clamp in place.

For wadding, I use t' Pratt protector. It's a large piece o' Nomex® (about 12" diameter), which works well for t' 4" rocket. Avast! Avast, me proud beauty! I just bundle up my chute, place t' protector over t' tube, makin' a little "cup" to hold t' chute, and tuck t' whole thin' down into t' tube. Avast! Well, arrr, blow me down! T' diameter of the rocket is big enough that things don't have t' be packed tightly. Arrr! I've never had a problem with a cooked chute or a tangled chute usin' this method.

Recovery:
T' shock-cord is about 12 feet o' elastic. Ahoy! Arrr! It's nice and long, so even if the ejection charge is late it doesn't hurt anything. Begad! T' chute is a standard octagon o' pink rip-stop with nylon shroud lines. Blimey! It's fairly lightweight and light-duty, me bucko, but t' rocket's nay very heavy for its size, so t' descent rate is just fine. Aye aye! Avast!

Summary:
Main pro: Flying! This be t' best flyer in me collection, and one that I never fail t' brin' out at a launch. Avast, me proud beauty! Blimey! I've flown it dozens o' times. Arrr! It's stable as all get-out, matey, ya bilge rat, and it just makes t' whole thin' look easy. Begad! Other pros are the instructions. Avast, me proud beauty! Begad! Cons: You've gotta cut your own fin-slots. Begad! Well, blow me down! I wish they'd at least give some tips on beefin' up t' aft end. Avast, me proud beauty! Arrr! Rockets do tend t' get dinged when they land, me hearties, arrr, but thar are plenty o' ways t' get around that.

I have had a Excel Plus for my years. It was one of my first high powered rocket kits that I have owned. I used this rocket for my level one cert on an I-284. What a flight. A real head snapper. This rocket is capable of flying on anything from a G-125 short (about a thousand foot flight) to a J motor. I have used this kit for my level two flight last summer. The last that I put on the kit was on a J-570. Nice fast lift off too about five hundred feet until the nose cone A.C.E. Decided to cave in. It looked like snow up there in the sky! The info given here was very accurate. The only con this kit was that the motor tube was about one millimeter too small. The casing would not fit. Always pre-test tube before gluing into the rocket!

My Excel Plus has become the 38mm workhorse in my fleet - I fly it at every launch I attend. It's easy to prep, looks good, and flies great! I've found that it turns in the best flights on the red, white, and blue loads for the AT 38/480 case (the I300T is my favorite.) Built entirely using wood glue, this rocket is durable and sturdy. A great value and just plain fun.
