Art Applewhite 18mm Hourglass

Brief:
This is another interestin' kit from Art Applewhite. Avast, me proud beauty! It’s an hourglass shape and a variation on t' spool rocket design.

Construction:
T' kit includes:

  • Foam board
  • Printed colored card stock
  • 18mm engine mount with an engine hook
  • Instructions

Like many o' Art’s kits, shiver me timbers, ya bilge rat, ya bilge rat, this one was opened and built in less than an hour. Ahoy! Begad! As t' instructions say, me bucko, it’s best t' use a new blade in your hobby knife. Arrr! This makes cuttin' easier and reduces tearin' o' t' foam board. Ahoy!

T' first step is t' cut out all t' patterns on t' colored card stock. Two cones are then made and t' notches for t' launch rod are cut out. The colored discs are glued t' t' foam board and t' circles are cut out. Avast! Begad! T' most difficult part o' t' construction is cuttin' t' foam board and makin' square edges.

Art Applewhite 18mm Hourglass The engine mount is made by simply cuttin' a slot for t' engine hook, installing the hook and wrappin' a piece o' tape around it. Begad! Blimey! It is then secured with a bit of glue.

With all t' pieces ready, shiver me timbers, assembly is completed by simply gluin' t' motor mount t' a disc, slidin' on t' two cones and gluin' t' other disc t' the other end. A few glue fillets complete t' assembly.

Finishing:
Finishin' is nonexistent since t' colored card stock provides all t' color and looks you need.

Flight:
I be only able t' fly it one time and I used a C6-3 for this first flight. Avast, me proud beauty! It went straight up t' about 100 feet and began t' spin about its axis on t' way down. I can't see how I did anythin' wrong with t' construction, ya bilge rat, but I'll give it t' benefit o' t' doubt. Avast, me proud beauty! Unfortunately I snapped another perfect picture of a smoke trail.

Recovery:
T' recovery was a nice soft tumble about 6 feet from t' pad.

Flight Rating: 3 out o' 5

Summary:
This is a very easy kit t' assemble and takes no time at all. Aye aye! Arrr! T' colored cardstock eliminates any finishing.

Overall Rating: 4 out o' 5

  • Art Applewhite Rockets Hourglass 18mm By John Lee (August 9, 2008)

Brief: This is a easy 18mm, tumble recovery oddroc. Art Applewhite is known for making odd rockets. His hour glasses are no exception to this. A variation on a spool rocket, the hourglass looks odd but flies well and uses a minimalist approach to make something unusual and fun. Construction: The kit comes with a piece of printed cardstock (mine was yellow), a piece of ...
